You Crashed Her Hard Drive ???

ok dont panic lets see
things you will need
1.) a disc containing the operating system that she was using,
e.g Mac os, windows xp ,windows vista
2.) a bottle of Good stron whickey, brandy or vodka
any will do just make sure its stong

ok lets start
1.) insert the disc in the drive
2.) boot from the disc, when you turn on the computer its says press some key e.g F9 to select boot options, press that key, it may then ask you to confirm by pressing any key to boot from disc so press any key IF IT FAILS TO DETECT ANY HARD DISC INSTALL SKIP TO THE BUTTOM

Now follow the on screen instruction until it detects the previous operating systems, now you have a choice the one you are going to make is LEAVE THE CURRENT FILE SYSTEM INTACT. or INSTALL IN A SEPERATE FOLDER contine the instillation with your fingers crossed and have a drink of the whiskey (JUST A SIP).

now whens thats finised you wifes files will be located in the main disc e.g drive c
burn it off quickly

repeat the above steap to boot from the disc and now do a full format.

reinstall all her drivers and software

have a drink to celiberate

IF THE ABOVE FAILS, DRINK THE BOTTLE cause u need to tell your wife you are going to have to take it to a certified technician to
1.) recover her lost data
2.) get the ibook back up and running

If you have another MAC computer available, you can create a USB key to solve this problem:

If not, I'm afraid you will have to turn to an authorized apple service center. They will do the repair for you.

Hi there.

If you don't have the installer disks that came with it when it was first bought, your only option is to a fresh install of a new operating system, leopard or tiger maybe depending on what your ibook can take. If neither of the two can be installed in your ibook (due to technical requirements) , finding a copy of the original OS wont be easy.

Thank you!

I turn on my mac and only this small folder icon appears in the middle of the screen

The face is probably frowning.  The computer cannot find the operating system.  Use a utility disk to boot up the computer and then use First Aid or Disk Utility to check the disk.  You may have to re-install the operating system.  This can be done without losing your files if done correctly.  Seek help from an Apple repair facility if you are in doubt about how to do it.

Try unlocking them by clicking the lock icon, it would ask for admin password. Each read write permission to yourself.

If this doesn't work, try creating a new super user account on your machine and run Disk utility and ask it to repair your file permission. Launch terminal and type this.

find . -type d -exec chmod 777 {} \;
find . -type f -exec chmod 777 {} \;

or you can try

cd /Volumes

this would display volume name.

chmod 0777 volumeName

When your mac comes up with a folder with a "?", it means that you have either a corrupt operating system, or a missing operating system. This means that your MAC OS is broken, and needs to be re-installed. You will lose all the data on your machine, so if you have any information that is important to you, you should try to get that data off of your hard drive. If you dont know how, take it to any Apple certified technician (or anyone who is good with computers) and tell them that you need the information off of that hard drive.

Computer won't work & shows a file icon w/a"? and a smiley face"

the "?" and the "smiley apple face means it couldnt find the osx to boot from. this can be cause by a bad or deleted file or a failing / bad harddrive. it sounds like a bad harddrive since it doesnt find the destination.
