Ps3 red light goes from green to yellow then does not start

I have a 60Gb Japanese PS3, Was on standby, freestanding in open space, standing vertically. I went to turn it on, and got this:

    1) Power light goes from red to green (briefly). Fan starts, but powers down straight away

    2) Power light then goes yellow (briefly)

    3) System beeps 3 times.

    4) power light goes red and blinks on and off continuously.

The PS3 is out of warrenty and an import, so I'm not in a position to send it back to sony - which otherwise might have been my first port of call. Some US ps3 owners with this problem have had it fixed by Sony under warrenty. And those outside warrenty have had to pay $150 to have the problem fixed.

    I have tried

    1) Removing and reseating the HDD - no effect

    2) Running the PS3 with no HDD - no effect

    3) Reformatting the HDD in a second PS3 - no effect

    4) Vacuuming all the vents - no effect

    5) Stripping down the ps3 completely - removing the heat sinks from the processor and gpu - cleaning the cpu and gpu of all the white heat transfer compound. Re-applying (more expensive) thin film of heat transfer compound. Re-building the ps3. - no effect

    6) Running without the Blue ray player connected - no effect

I have researched the problem, and the general consensus is that this fault code represents a hardware failure of some sort. No-one seems to be able to identify which hardware component it may be!

    I.e.

    1) Is it CPU / GPU - seems unlikely as would expect no error codes at all?

    2) Blue ray player.

    3) Power supply

    4) Fan

    etc.

One possible solution would be to send the unit off to be repaired at a third party repair shop. These seem to run at around £70.

    Eg Console Werks

I would find it more satisfying if I could identify which component was faulty and replace it, so any advice on bench testing, say the fan, or blue ray player would be appreciated.

same problem with red light of death, To get disc out of machine, turn off on back switch, then hold down eject button whilst turning on back switch, keep eject button held down for about fifteen seconds or until you hear the fans kick in, then take finger off, disc should eject but unfortunately the machine will turn off and red light problem will return.

    Hope this helps,

When you start the Playstation 3 and it goes green to yellow to flashing red, this is due to an error with the Motherboard. Either there is some bridging in the soldering somewhere or the motherboard needs to be reflowed, due to bad solder connections. This problem is basically identical to the Xbox 360's "Red Ring of Death" issue that has been talked about quite a lot lately, which is supposedly caused by the Industry's switch to lead free solder.
Unfortunately I can't find anyone who has successfully reflowed a PS3 Motherboard, although I have found some people who have theorized about it. you can find that here
http://forums.llamma.com/viewtopic.php?t=13860&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0&sid=21391e834d9c8aea5582da92a03b5e2f

Your other options are to buy a working playstation 3 motherboard on ebay (approx. $120), send it to Sony (since these issues are not covered in the warranty for some reason, you will have to pay their repair fee of $160), or buy a new playstation 3.
Hope that helps.

Your console needs to be repaired.  It has a chip on the motherboard that needs to be resoldered.  If you are under warranty with Sony you should call them, otherwise joegoods.com repairs that as well.

Same problem, I was playing online, game froze. I have tried everything. 2 months passed my warranty. This sucks. I babied my PS3 more than anyone that I know. I haven't even played it as much as any of my friends have played theirs. SONY should do something about this. $500 + for a system that last a year and 2 months? IF anyone finds anything out my email is wutangcowboy@hotmail.com thanks

SOURCE: light turns on, light turns yellow, light turns red and blinks.

Your ps3 has overheated. This is the equivilent to the red ring of death for xbox 360. The ps3 problem is called "yellow light of death" this means your ps3 has died due to the console being overheated. The solution to this problem is either getting a new playstation or take it to a shop in the UK and they could help you fix it for a price around £30-£50 GBP.

SOURCE: My PS3 has a flashing red light, when I turn it

Hello there baileys 946

If you have the brief flashing yellow light, then its followed by a red blinking light then you have the yellow light of death AKA the YLOD.

The lights are a warning sign to let you know something is wrong. I can give you the quick explanation, There are 2 chips on the motherboard inside the PS3, the GPU (graphics) and the CPU (brain), when playing the ps3 the solder heats up and when you finish playing it cools down, over time this will cause the soldering to crack and the chips to lose connection with the motherboard and you get the YLOD.

WHERE TO GO FROM HERE

Option 1 - Call Sony

In warranty the Price is Free, out of warranty the Price is $150, the whole process is 4-6 weeks

You can call Sony and they will collect the PS3, repair/replace, and deliver the PS3 back to you

Option 2 - Fix it your Self

You can use a PS3 fix manual to get this fixed easily and at home using household tools you probably already own.

Click here to know more on PS3 Fix Manuals which has helped so many people like you.

Good luck

Best regards

Peter
