Question about Dell Dimension 2400 PC Desktop

1 Answer

Replacement HD I need to buy a replacement hard drive for my Dell Dimension 2400. Dell said it would cost me $99.99 not including taxes and shipping. I think I can do better, but I'm not sure what I need to look for to purchase the right HD. Can anyone tell me how to buy the right HD that will be compatible with my computer. It doesn't need to be the exact same memory as my old drive.

    Antiochpc,

Thank you very much for the response. I'm not sure if it is SATA or IDE, but now that you informed me, I will be sure sure to look. Is that the only determining factor that I need to purchase a new HD? Thank you very much also for the website. I've heard of them, but didn't know which company to shop from. Have a great night.

Do you know if it is SATA or IDE? If you look at your hard drive, an IDE will have a wide cable connected to the back of it. If it is SATA, it will be a small cable that connects it to the motherboard. I think it is SATA. But nonetheless, depending on the size of the hard drive you want, you can get decent hard drives in the $60 range at www.tigerdirect.com.

Thanks and please take a moment to rate as fixya. Thank you.

Yes, that is the only determining factor, that and the size you want. Thanks :c)

I'm trying to increase hard disk space on a Dell

Hi.

The Dell Inspiron 1100 is a laptop whereas the Dell Dimension 2400 is a desktop pc.

The hard drives are incompatible because they are a different size, plus the Inspiron only supports one hard drive so you can't install a slave device. The only way to increase hard disk space is to buy a large capacity internal IDE laptop drive or an external hard drive.

Regards.

Where is the hard drive in the dimension 2400 dell. I see the cd drives, the power supply, the cooling fan, the heatsink, the video card, the memories... so where is the hard drive?

You know the power button in the front? If you open the cover to see the insides, there is the HD that is kind of covered by a metal slot (has like holes...). Well, the HD is right next to the power button in the front, but inside.... Here is a picture. The wires are attached to the HD. yup.

Or a HD very simlar would be the best hard drive for you at the moment. If you need something a little bigger, you need to make sure the hard drive is a IDE hard drive, otherwise it won't work in your system.

Glad to help

I have a PC Dell Dimension 2400 with a hard 40 GB

Basically when you install a new boot drive you need to install Windows operating system on the new hard drive, also the device drivers (eg video, audio, modem, LAN etc), your programs and data. The reason programs has to be installed is because the installation process copied DLL files to the System folders and makes changes to the registry.
You can only copy your data onto the new hard disk.
To avoid copying your data to the new hard drive, you can set up the old hard drive as second hard drive (ie. slave drive), if you delete the redundant folders and leave only the data folders then you have an adddition 40Gb of disk space.

Dell dimension 2400 diskette drive 0 seek failure

Check your BIOS setting to see if it detects the hard drive (Primary disk 0). If it can't detect the hard drive then the hard drive maybe faulty. Open the case unpluge the IDE cable from the hard drive and reconnect it again, also unplug the IDE cable at the motherboard and reconnect it again including the power connector on the hard drive.
There maybe an option to test the hard drive in the BIOS, if so use it to test the hard drive.
If the hard drive is faulty, you need to replace it and install Windows, the various device drivers and your programs to get a functioning computer again.
You might consider buying a new computer (it will be faster & better than the old Dell) and you have your new monitor to go with it.

D drive onj dell dimension 2400 will not open...

Using a small needle their should be a hole in the front. This is the safety eject hole that will open the drive 99% of the time. Replacing the drive is just as easy. remove the few screws on the bottom of the laptop nearest the drive and grasp ahold of the bay and slide it away from the computer....hope this helped some....

How to install new HD w/o a floppy?

Hi,
Your computer should be able to handle either the 120 or 150 replacement drive. Most drives today come ready to load. Your Dell installation disk would be the best bet to install everything on the new drive. The restore disk will look for existing software and not find it. The other thing you might want to try is once you get the new disk up and running, change the pin setting on the second drive to be a slave drive and your new drive to a master with slave, and try to recover your data. If you don't have the dell install disk, a copy of Windows will also do the trick. No you don't need a floppy unless you plan on reformatting the new drive.

Hope this helps
