I am having the same problem. I bought my son an ipod nano 3rd Gen for Christmas and have been trying to solve this problem. It recongnizes the ipod, but asks that I install the software, but I did not receive a software disk with the ipod and I bought it brand new. If anyone could help me with this I would greatly appreciate it!

If it's asking to install a driver for the iPod the error is consistent with a faulty chip on the iPod main board. There could be many other reasons - I would ask you to clarify a bit.

Hello, friend. I need more info to help you fix the problem. If your problem is your computer can't recognize your iPod when you plug in iPod, you may try these methods.
1. Update iTunes to the latest version
2. Check the USB cable
3. Verify that Apple Mobile Device Support is installed
4. Restart the Apple Mobile Device Service and verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed
5. You may try this iPod file manager, it's a nice iTunes alternative that can help you manage iPod files including delete, upload, play, copy, etc.

Ipod is not recognized by itunes. it wont play or charge it just blinks 4 times when i plug it in

  1. The iPod reset utility will reset your iPod shuffle back to it's factory settings. It works for the following shuffles: iPod shuffle (1st Generation) - iPod Software version 1.1.5, iPod shuffle (2nd Generation) - iPod Software version 1.0.3
The reset utility will fix the following issues.
    1. The iPod won't play music and can't be restored using iTunes
    2. iTunes won't see the iPod but you can see it under "My Computer" in windows or under Apple System Profiler on a Mac.
    3. iPod shuffle (1st Generation) is identified as a device in "Recovery mode." iPod shuffle (2nd Generation) is identified as a "USB DFU device."
  2. You have to have administrator privileges to run the restore software and it will wipe out all the information on the iPod (including all your music) and install factory software back onto it.
System requirements are Mac OS X 10.3.9, or later, Win2k with sp4, Win XP, this won't work on Vista.
Download the file for the program here:
    MAC
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/ipodresetutility102formac.html
    Windows
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/ipodresetutility102forwindows.html
  3. Install the software onto your computer, plug your iPod into the USB port and run the reset program, it will ask for your permission to reset the iPod, answer yes and the process will proceed. After finishing the reset procedure then use iTunes or whatever software is used to access your iPod and load your music. Enjoy your toy!

Does one have to have apple computer for ipod one touch

Are you going to (www.apple.com/itunes/download) to download the latest version of iTunes? Also I would suggest attempting the download with your firewall/anti-virus software disabled. As they can sometimes cause the itunes download to not complete or download with missing files. They are not viruses but sometimes the different softwares will think they are malicious. You do not have to own an apple computer to use an apple iPod. Just make sure that your Operating System on your PC is up to date an you should be good to go. If your not downloading iTunes version 8.1.1.10 then it's not the latest version. :)

Downlaod-error messege when attempting to reset iPod classis

If when you have a new ipod and you connect it to a computer, if the first computer you connect it to is a mac, then that is the only type of pc it will work with after that. If you want it to connect it to a windows, you will have to restore it which will allow it to work with windows software. For some reason unknown, mac and windows have different loading software for the ipod and has to be re-installed with a restore before it can work with a different operating system. When it restores on your computer, check to make sure it has a strong internet connection. You should be able to restore after that.
