When I plug the unit in it gives a puff of smoke and kicks my breaker
Sounds like you have a pinched or bare wire inside the unit. If it has louvers for ventilation, I would try this experiment, but just once, and it needs to be at night. Reset the breaker, and get a small flashlight. Go to the unit and get it ready to plug in. Turn off the lights in the room and make sure it is really quiet, use the flashlight to get to the unit and the plug. Looking at the unit, turn off the flashlight and plug it in. You should listen for a crack or pop (the sound of the short) and watch inside the unit for a spark (the location of the short). If my hunch is correct, you will find the problem and be able to repair it. If not, then I would recommend calling out a tech or taking the unit to a repair depot. Good Luck.
