2 0f 4 ports do not work

I have owned linksys befsr41 over three years. All of a sudden this morning while 3 computers were running and connected to the router, ports 2 & 3 do not work, but ports 1 & 4 do work. An error message on the computer connected to port 2 is a network connection is unplugged. However all connections are plugged in properly. When I move a network cable from port 2 or 3 into port 1 or 4 the computer is once again connected. The Lan Indicators are green for ports 1 and 4, but there are no lights blinking or solid for ports 2 or 3. Thus only two computers are connected to the internet. I have unplugged the power to the router for over 5 minutes and then re-powered, but the problem remains. Any help is appreciated.

It sounds as though the ports on the cable/dsl router as bad. There really isn't anything you can do. It just happens. The typical shelf life of those routers is about 3-4 years. You could go out and buy another one or if you just need more ports go out and buy a little 5 port switch and plug it into one of the working ports and your comptuers into the 5 port switch.

I have a WRT54G router and want to daisy chain a Linksys BEFSR41 switch off it, but I seem to be doing it wrong...

Not sure if you just want to expand the amont of computer you can connect to it or the wireless range but I would setup the BEFSR41:
  • Disable DHCP
  • Set an address out of the DHCP scope of the WRT54G
  • Connect them LAN to LAN if not use xover to connect them

I have a linksys router. model number befsr41 v. 3. i have a acer computer and some reason it wont recognize the network, calling it unidentified network, and internet does not work.. what do i do

The first thing is that the router model number you have is not a wireless router.
Now if you are connecting the computer to the router with the Ethernet cable then check the port light on the router. If you connect the computer to the port number 2 then port 2 light should lit up on the router.
Now check the IP address on the computer. If you are not getting proper IP address then check the DHCP server on the router is enabled.
If that is enabled and still not getting the IP address then assign a static IP address on the computer.

Your provider probably sent you either a cable modem or adsl modem. If you connect the single port on the modem to the WAN or Internet Port on the Linksys and then connect the computers to any of the 4 ports that are grouped together, it should work.
Mac or PC, it makes no difference and drivers are not needed.
Unless this is a new router or it is one that you personally configured, I recommend resetting it back to factory default by holding down the little red button for 30 seconds, this eliminates any configuration issues that someone else may have introduced.

Linksys router limits speed to 5 meg.

Try to access the router's setup page and change the MTU settings. The default address for the Befsr41 is 192.168.1.1. Here are instructions:

1) Use a computer wired to the router.
2) Launch a browser and type in 192.168.1.1, leave the username blank and the password is admin or the password you have set when you first configured the router.
3) Click on the Advanced tab then click on the Filters tab. On the bottom part you have MTU.
4) Enable that option and set MTU to 1500, 1400, 1300 (for cable ISP connection) and 1492 (for DSL connection) and check if it will work.
4) If that does not work, you can try upgrading the firmware of your router.
