Olivetti Lettera 32 - carriage progression problem

I've just bought a Lettera 32, but when it arrived it doesn't seem to work.

The carriage doesn't 'catch and hold' at the beginning of the line and there is no carriage progression - when a key is struck there is no advancing.

The carriage can be moved freely from side to side, but always springs back to the far left (the end of the line).

As far as I can tell, the mainspring is okay, and the carriage lock is not on.

Any suggestions?

Could be the carriage release lever is jammed or worse the escapement dog is broken.

Olivetti Lettera 32 typewriter - a few problems!

Problem 1 means the the spring on the springdrum has unwound. It is a job winding it and hooking the carriage cord back up. Might want to have a pro do this one.
Prob 2..some lettera 32's had preset tabs every 10 spaces. Also you can type by a tab..it is not a margin..it just stops the carriage when they are set.

Olivetti Lettera 32 typwritter carriage doesn't move

If the locking lever is off, then the carriage is bound, or one of the tabs is hung, try releasing all the tabs, pushing the space bar or the tab key while gently moving the carriage.
Try all of the function like shift while gently pushing on the carriage always to the right..
also check the that the margins are not locked.
This could be a lot of different things...

Did anyone answer the problem of unlocking the carriage on the olivetti lettera 22? thankyou

There is a small lever on the right side of the machine under the carriage that is meant to lock the carriage for transport. Press this down.

Can't find carriage lock on Olivetti Lettera 25

Learn how to unlock the carriage in Olivetti Lettera 22 Manual posted by Ed Cornish (Carriage Locking Lever 7). It is a different machine model, but the lock/unlock mechanism might be the same.
