This is because your optical drive has gone bad. The CD and DVD uses two different lasers to read cds or dvds. The dvd laser has gone bad and the drive will have to be replaced.

Thanks and please take a moment to rate as fixya. Thank you.

What is the Lifespan of CD Drives? I have an HP dv7 that seems like the cd rom is not communicating well with the machine. Could it be software related?

Burning CD-R or DVD-R shortens the life cycle of any CD-R or DVD-R drive, while reading is generally. If you have burnt 1 disc per day, it is not surprising your DVD-RW drive is worn out.

1 detail to take into consideration: if you use ReWritable media, change them from time to time. I thought my DVD-Recorder was dead as I got a lot of non responding issue with DVD+RW media (while my computer had no problem to read these media), and finally getting rid off the old media and taking newer DVD+RW media has given the DVD-Recorder 3 more years.

I have an Acer Aspire1 Netbook and below is the problem. Went to BIOS set defaults but still get the same thing: For Atheros PCIE Ethernet Controller... check cable connection PXE-MOF:exiting intel PXE...

A computer tries to "boot" from many devices:

* 3.5-inch floppy-disk (if available)
* USB memory-stick (if connected)
* internal CD/DVD device
* external CD/DVD device
* internal disk-drive
* over your network-cable, by talking to a "network boot server".

When it tries to boot over the network-cable, and *NO* "boot-server" responds,
you get the "check cable connection" and "exiting from P(re)(e)X(ecution)E(nvironment)" mode.

If it cannot boot from your 'C:' drive, and cannot boot from the network boot-server,
your computer responds "no bootable device" and "insert boot disk" (into CD or floppy-disk),
and "press any key" (to try again to boot).

What this USUALLY means is that your 'C:' disk-drive has stopped working,
meaning that Windows cannot be "booted" from it.

Seek help from a qualified technician to trouble-shoot your disk-drive, and/or to replace it, and/or to reinstall Windows, and/or to "repair" your existing Windows installation.

My acer 4720 cannot play any DVD.

your dvd rom won't play dvd, cd and even respond it is due to your optical lens that cannot read data from any disc. the laser is so weak. for short its blind thats why not responding.

I have a new sony vaio VGN-FW230J that recently the dvd drive has stopped opening and when i found the button to manualy open several disks will not play at all. I am currently in Afghanistan so it is...

due to dusty environment as in the area u mentioned it happens the lens gets dusty and when it tries to read during that period it doesnt respond to the opening button so the only solution is

open the dvd tray u can see that shiny eye like thing try cleaning th lens gently in round movement with a tissue paper or very soft cloth used to clean lcd screens see if it works , other wise ur DVD drive lens got weak from use now adays service centers are getting tons of them everyday for replacements

next time if u get into trouble try pressing the eject button for like 5-8 sec it will respond otherwise restart immidiately then it will respond to ur press when the sys is restarting take out the disk and try the cleaning process

pls do rate me if i fixed what u wanted

G-drive is not working

Try removing battery and unplugging AC adapter for 5 minutes.

On startup press repeatedly the eject button on CD before system starts loading.

If that does not work , you will need to take the computer to a repair shop, as DVD unit must be disassembled to take disk out.

Laptop trouble

There is a problem with your DVD drive, then. I think it is unable to detect because there is dirt on the delicate little lens or some other problem.

Clean the lens with a cheaply available lens cleaning disc a special anti-static cloth made for these purposes.

Or see if the PC itself detects the drive. If it doesn't, restore the system to the time when it was all okay. Use System Restore.

If nothing works, show it to a doctor, and maybe you have to change it.
