Question about Sony KP-61XBR48 61" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

SONY KP-61XBR38 At turn-on all is OK. After 5 minutes we get blue and yellow phantom images, especially on the right side of the screen. Is this a problem with the convergence board? If yes, I am not technically capable of doing a circuit board repair. But if you can instruct me on how to identify the board and pull it out, I could then send it to a repair person -- especially someone you might know... I don't live in the States, but will be going there next month for 3 weeks. My e-mail address: j.fonseca@pulmomed.fr Thanks guy!

Yes, I am able to use the normal user convergence function using the remote. I can move the red and blue lines in all four directions.

Now here's the strange thing. I hadn't used the tv after I posted my problem. But to answer you, I had to turn it on. This time, there were no phantom images. Before, they had started after about 5 minutes. I kept waiting, because after they started I wanted to then try to use the remote and do the normal user convergence. Well, I watched for a whole hour without any phantom blue/yellow images at all. The picture was normal, although now that I am casting a critical eye, it does seem a little out of focus.

It could be either convergence or the velocity boards. Are you able to move the red and blue convergence in all four direcctions with the convergence adjustments?

I would check the solder around the convergence ICs thats most likely what the problem is.

Picture is very blue, especially in dark scenes.

Sony TVs has an Optical Block issue. If there is an issue with the optical block, then there will be green, blue patches or tint on the TV display. Try resetting the TV to the factory settings and try Power resetting the TV. Turn Off the TV and remove the power plug from the wall outlet for 1 minute and reconnect it and check the operation. If the issue still persists, then TV may require service. You can contact the Customer relations team and check for the available options. Sony had repaired free of cost for such issues. Hence, contact the customer relations.

Screen fades to blue.

The Blue SCREEN setting is too high. These adjustments are located inside the TV behind the front panel. There are two screws behind covers and then a wooden panel to remove to access the adjustments. The leftmost set are for BLUE, the middle are GREEN, and the right are RED. The top row are FOCUS and the bottom are SCREEN. Focus will focus/unfocus the tube and Screen will adjust the power of that tube (there are 3 tubes, one for each color). If Screen is adjusted too high, horizontal lines will appear (my TV had red lines, but I played around with the knobs and saw that it could happen on any of the colors). Additionally, if SCREEN is set even higher than that, the tube could go so high that it turns the whole screen that color (in your case, blue). If this happens the TV will shut down, probably due to either overheating or overvolting. To fix this issue, turn the appropriate SCREEN dial down until the lines go away. In your case, you want to turn the lower left dial down. Don't turn it too far down, if you turn it more than necessary the TV can give you an AKB error (noted by the STANDBY light flashing a sequence of 5 blinks).

Bad convergence Amp ics mounted to large metal heat sinks on deflection bd.Sony parts around $40.00 each-generic approx 12.00 ea.The board must be pulled out of chassis frame to unsolder the ICs.and some alignment will be needed after replacement.NOT a do it yourself job unless experienced at soldering and desoldering.

Error Code 5 flashes when unit shuts down

Good Day;
It sounds like the TV may have a shorted CRT, picture tube, but let's trouble shoot:
1. Unplug TV from wall.
2. Remove speaker grill, two on bottom, the screws are covered with plastic caps, right and left side on bottom next to floor.
3. Remove inner panel.
4. The blue tube is the one the right side, remove socket, with phillips driver, make sure it's not touching anything.
5. Plug and turn TV back on, if picture appears with no blue it's the tube.
6. If still shuts down, bad blue CRT driver IC.
CAUTION: Call a factory authorized service dealer to give you an estimate, if this sounds too hard.
Good Luck, Day, Big Irish.

Power supply . I would check for shorted Horizontal output transistor first then low voltage regulators. You will need some trouble shooting experience and a service manual for sure. You can get on at this link. http://www.servicemanuals.net/results.aspx?type=SM&brand=0&model=kp61xbr38 let me know if i can help you further.

Yellow vertical bar on right edge of screen

Your set is starting to get a convergence problem and the only way to repair it is by changing the convergence IC's,(3)one for each color, the blue migh be showing more now but soon all 3 colors will be out of alignment and you will not be able to correct it with the custumer controls,is great that it has worked for so long without this problem,if you are familiar with tv service you have a place to check but if you are not too familiar be safe and call for help from a pro-servicer.Let Us know how it goes.
