Hi!

This is almost ALWAYS caused by a problem (a short OR an open) in the coax cable from the VHF radio to the antenna. An easy way to check is to JUST insert the PL-259 connector into the socket of the radio, making sure that ONLY the center pin is making contact with the socket. If the weather channels come in clearly, then it's usually an easy fix. Simply check the connections at each end of the coax, looking for a poor center pin solder connection or perhaps a bit of the ground braid is shorting out the center lead. A magnifying glass is a great tool to spot problems.

If the coax proves NOT to be the problem, then the fault is likely to be in the radio itself and is probably a bad solder connection where the antenna chassis mount attaches to the PC board.

Hope this is helpful.
Good Luck!

Why won't my ic-m34 doesn't receive - Icom Ic-m34 Vhf Waterproof Marine Two-way Radio

If it can receive some signals that are close to you, then the RF front end protection diodes are likely shorted. This would require someone with expertise in surface mount components to repair. Take it to a dealer and have them look at it.

Icom m36 will not receive. Speaker makes noise with squelch all the way up but just won't receive anything including weather.

You may have the CTCSS tone squelch enabled so unless a station you're listening to is encoding CTCSS tones, you won't hear the traffic you're expecting.

Radio not receiving on any channel

Hi Mike,

The manual for this radio (in Adobe .pdf format) is available for download directly from Icom America, free of charges.

Since the "AquaQuake" function works and you do hear static when the squelch is off, that is sufficient to let us know that the voice coil of the speaker is functional and should produce sounds with the right signal applied.

The first thing to determine is if you're close enough to another operating transmitter for the radio to receive a signal. One of the 10 weather channels the radio is capable of tuning should be close enough produce some intelligible audio from the speaker - assuming the squelch setting isn't set too high.

If a WX channel works, then you'll need to see if there's a VHF Marine band transmitter operating nearby. You might need to set another Marine band radio receiver up to verify that there is indeed a signal present on the particular Marine band channel that you're monitoring. A list of frequencies is published on pg 27 (of the manual linked above) in case you need to convert between channel and frequency to tune on a non-channelized radio.

Outside of that, there's little the end user can do without specialized test equipment, schematics and of course, training. Many shops will be happy to provide an estimate for repair when provided with a small bench diagnostic fee. This fee is usually applied towards an authorized repair by most reputable repair shops.

I hope this helps & good luck!

I have an ICOM IC M505 marine VHF which is the closest model to the one described below. It is less than 3 years old. The channels have been very quiet including channel 16. This prompted me to test the...

Probably not the squelch but the speaker on the VHF. These radios are famous for crapping out when getting wet.
Try listening to the weather radio VHF ch 01, 02, or 03. depending on your location and play with squelch.. Keep in mind they do make external speakers you can hook up.

How to add frequencies/channels to ICOM IC-F21 two-way radios?

Sorry, but your radio is limited to 16 channels in the 400-430 and 440-470 MHz ranges. The number of channels cannot be expanded, nor can the frequency coverage.

While receiving the receiver cuts out momentarily approximately every 10 seconds

This sounds like you have the "Weather Alert" function turned on. With this on, the radio will check for an emergency signal on the weather channels about every 10 seconds.

I have an icom m304marine vhf with a shakespeare

Sound like you have an antenna issue. Try a different antenna with coax. If the problem is still there, than you have a problem with the radio. Icom makes really good marine radios but you could have a defective one.
