Question about Gateway PC Desktops

1 Answer

I'm trying to install a new Anti virus program and I have to delete my current one before I can install. When I go to the control panel to find the program to delete it. I push the Change or delete button and this message keeps popping up. Windows installer service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the windows installed is not correctly installed contact your support personnel for assistance. Can you help. I'm not sure what to do. Thank you, Peter Martell

Iam unable to install winamp 5.7.7. while installing it is saying that winamp.exe cannot locate

This error usually comes up if the anti-virus program detects the .EXE file has a virus and quartines it or deletes it.

before you download win-amp 5.7.7 disable the anti-virus temporally and then download and install it.

once you have installed it do remember to re-enable the anti-virus program.

The delete function stopped working on outlook express

  • First, have you made sure that you are current with Windows Update patches and fixes? There are a bunch of nasty bugs in Outlook Express that can leave you open to attacks from specially formatted emails -- with or without attachments. Some viruses can be activated and spread to others just by viewing a message in the preview pane, but ONLY if you are using an old, unpatched version of Outlook.

  • Next, is your anti-virus protection up to date? If your service has expired, renew it ASAP. Or check with your ISP to see if they offer any free anti-virus software.

  • Try turning off the preview pane in Outlook (use View / Layout and UNcheck Show Preview Pane). Then right-click the offending message and select Delete.

  • Some users report success with pressing the Shift and Delete keys after highlighting the message. Note: This technique will delete the message without sending it to the Deleted Items folder.

  • Finally, it's possible that the undelete-able email does not contain any harmful content, but attempting to open it triggers a flaw in your anti-virus scanner. If you are certain that the email is a harmless message from a known person (and they are using anti-virus software), you could try suspending your anti-virus program, then attempt to delete the message.

My computer has this pop up antivirus 2009 warning me its found 36 problems if i dont purchase i will loss data it will not allow me to delete it either

DO NOT buy this! Regardless of who it's from it's nothing but spyware. No reputable company would do this!
Go to and download AVG Free 8.0 anti-virus (Best anti-virus in my opinion by far) and install it. Also get A-Squared Free at the same time. It will find and stop what's giving you this message. There's no need for any repair or for you to buy ANYTHING!
If your'e using Windows XP Sp.2 or Vista you will need to disconnect from the internet (just to be extra safe) and open your control panel and click on "security center" then go down to anti-virus and click on 'recommendations' and check the box about "I have anti-virus I'll monitor myself" before you can install the new programs. Just follow their instructions and you should never have this problem again.

I have a virus and stmanteec antivirus notification keeps popping up on my screen: What can I do??? Help Scan type: Auto-Protect Scan Event: Threat Found! Threat: Trojan.Zlob File: ...

If you have a virus you can not delete or if your system will not boot up correctly and you suspect a virus is the problem, a recommended solution is to start your computer in safe mode and run a virus scan. By running your computer in safe mode, non-essential processes do not start and non-core components are disabled. In other words, only the minimum necessary programs will load. Tough to remove viruses, spyware and other malware usually have no chance to run and disrupt your system and can more easily be removed.
**To run a virus scan in safe mode, you must have active anti virus software installed on your computer.
To run a virus scan in safe mode, follow these steps:
    1. If your computer is on, shut it down
    2. Power on your computer
    3. Immediately after you power on your computer, repeatedly press the [F8] key (about once per second)
    4. In the Windows Advanced Options Menu screen, use the arrows to select Safe Mode and presss [Enter]
    5. Select your current operating system and press [Enter]
    6. Select the user you would like to login under (if applicable)
    7. When your system finishes booting, click the Start button on your task bar
    8. Move your cursor over All Programs and navigate to your anti virus program
    9. Click on your antiv virus program to run it and follow the anti virus program’s normal steps to run a virus scan
    10. After the virus scan is complete, Delete all detected viruses
    11. Close out of your anti virus software
    12. Restart your computer (it should start in normal mode)

    Computer problem

The only way to get a reliable anti-virus is to purchase. Use the control panel - add/remove and uninstall any avg programs. Then run msconfig - startup and disable any avg program. Reboot. See what happens. Purchase an anti-virus and load that.

Please completley remove the norton security from my computer...trying to run something comcst says you need to do something to rmove it...please do asap ...thank you

Go into Control Panel, then Add/Remove Programs. Wait for the list of all programs to load up.

Go down through the list and look for Norton Internet Security. Remove it. It will take a very long time, sometimes 1/2 hour or more depending on speed of computer. Reboot the computer after it has been removed, especially if/when it asks you to reboot after the process.

After rebooting, go back into Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs. Look for Symantec or Norton's Live Update, remove that as well. Also remove any other Symantec/Norton Anti-Virus or Internet Security programs as well. Then reboot the computer again.

Your computer should be much, much faster now. So now you need a new Anti-Virus program...

I've found in my experience that Norton and McAfee do more damage to some computers than good, besides the fact that they are severely over-priced. I would NEVER install either Norton (Symantec) or McAfee on anyone's computer. Matter of fact, I just had to remove Norton 2008 from a lady's computer today, an old Dell 2400 because her system was too old and slow to run new Norton.

My suggestions for much better anti-virus would be...

    - Kaspersky Anti-Virus (search for it on Google, etc)

    - Trend Micro PC-Cillin Anti-Virus (search for it on Google, etc)

    - AVG Free Anti-Virus at, they also have more elaborate versions with more protection for a cost.

I personally use AVG on my computers, and my family does as well. It's very effective and gets out viruses that even Norton cannot remove.
