Your DVD recorder remote control can be programmed (with different codes), so it can be used with multiple Panasonic DVD players.
When you press a button and the display shows [ CHK REMOTE # ] or [ RC# ] or [ SET# ] it means that the DVD recorder and the remote control are not set to the same code.
To set the remote control code to that of the DVD recorder, press and hold [ ENTER ] as well as the corresponding code number on the display (1, 2 or 3) at the same time for more than 2 seconds.
Try reprogramming the remote so it matches the unit. If you get SET 3 or DVD 3 on the display, chances are the remote's command code is different to the unit, in which case the following may help a bit:
Ensuring new batteries are in the remote, correctly polarised ( + and - ) and with the remote pointed at the unit (while unit is on), press and hold both the and [ENTER/OK] buttons TOGETHER for 5 - 10 seconds, then release. The remote should now fully control the unit.
If it doesn't, check the batteries and repeat the above. The above procedure is a suggestion based on Panasonic DVD recorders and their operation troubleshooting manuals. Give it a try at least.
You can try this simple idea; to re-code the remote to your unit, press and hold 1 and ENTER/OK buttons together for 5 - 10 seconds, then release. This should restore the remote command to match the unit, and thus the remote should work. Failing that, replace the batteries in the remote with new ones, and repeat the above suggested procedure.
If the remote is triggering 'SET 1' on the unit's display, this simply means the remote code is different to the unit, and hence the remote requires a reset to restore control to it whenever the batteries are replaced. Easy enough to fix, doesn't take very long, and should not cost anything except some new batteries if required.
Setting the Remote Control Code of the Player: Point the remote control at the DISPLAY button.
The display on the player changes as shown below, and the player will be set to the smae number as the remote control.
Press and hold 1 first and then POWER on the memote control together for more than 5 seconds.

Had the same problem when I changed the factory settings by mistake. There is no "cancel" button in the remote or the set. What worked for me was to follow the directions on P. 22 of the manual and change the remote settings to DVD 1. This is done by holding the "Enter" button and pressing number 1 on the keypad simultaneously for more than 5 seconds. Then, you go back to the "Settings" screen with the "Settings" button, change the control back to DVD 3, and reverse the setting in the remote by pressing "Enter" and the number 3 this time. Remember to hold them down more than 5 seconds. Good luck!
