Sony Wega Projection TV - Thin Diagonal Colored Lines Over Picture

We have a 42" Sony Grand Wega TV - KDF-E42A10, manufacture date November 2005 - we have what we now know is a widespread issue with this line - of when you turn the tv on the standby flashes for a few minutes but the picture never comes on - just a dark blue screen. I found out from the Sony website it just needs a software update and they have a tech coming out next week free of charge to upload the new software. Their website suggested unplugging the TV for 30 seconds so it will reset itself and that should give us a little more viewing time until the tech comes out. Well, we did this and now the screen comes on but it is COVERED left to right with thin colored lines (I'm guessing EVERY color in it's spectrum). I went back to the sony website but cannot find ANYTHING related to this new issue. Please help! I was so excited and proud of myself for figuring out what was wrong with it (I had to take matters into my own hands since my husband kept putting it off *^o^*) only to discover this new issue. Any guidance would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks so much!!

I'm an IDIOT they're VERTICAL LINES not diagonal! DUH! too much googling for me today :-)

  • moonbaby78 Jul 17, 2008

So the tech guy came out to do the "free" update compliments of Sony - the update never completed - what was supposed to take 15minutes he let run for 45 minutes before giving up and taking his stuff and leaving - now the tv won't even TRY to come on - it doesn't power up at all (okay so now WORSE problems than before) now the standby light just blinks red-green-red-green-red green-red-green ... no cycle like the self diagnostics. NOW I get to pay a Sony tech to come diagnose what they were supposed to fix for free and is now a worse problem... AWESOMENESS!!! If any one has any tips, or has had the same experience please offer up advise... thank you!!!

    Signed

I just turned mine TV on tonight, took a long time to turn on and the the whole screen was covered in the vertical colored lines. Just scheduled service - not until Tuesday though. Did the software update ever work?

    **UPDATE** 7/25/08

Sony guy came out today and determined that the update never completed, and never should have been ATTEMPTED TO BEGIN WITH because the B Block Assembly is defective. The vertical lines we were seeing were symptomatic to this B Block Assembly. Cost to repair Part & Labor = $869.65. If the intent of Sony is to get sales up by building crappy products, and refusing to take responsibility for defective parts (I've been on MANY forums and have found that this is an EXTREMELY common problem) then they have suceeded! We will be replacing not repairing, only DEFINATELY will not be buying another Sony anything. The last few Sony products we have had have been ****. They USED to be a solid, reliable electronics brand. Here's a picture of the colored lines we were experiencing:

I have the same problem and am currently talking to Sony customer "Support", when I informed them that my research indicated that this was a somewhat common problem they tell me that there is no such known problem. Great.

I have the same problem with the Sony 50" Grand Wega (KDF-E50A10).
The problem started 4 months after the warranty expired- I was able to sometimes get it to operate normal by pulling the plug and plugging it back in, but that only worked for a month or two. The tv has sat idle for the last year. I turn it on every once in a while, hoping to find a pot of gold under all those rainbow lines.
SONY Support was no help, claims they never heard of the problem. When I first researched the problem I was told it might cost over $1000. to repair (I guess that's where the "Grand" comes from in the tv's name). My house is full of Sony Products and I never had any problems with them, I'm hoping that SONY eventually steps up and admits there is a problem and offers a repair. If no solution by December 2008, I bought my last SONY Product, and man will I campaign against them with every method I know.

Lately when turning the tv on, light flashes on front of unit for over a minute, then only sound comes on...no picture. I turn off the unit and wait awhile before trying again. This sometimes goes on for...

That definately sounds like a lamp going bad. I've seen a lot of these in our shop doing same thing and a new lamp fixes about everyone of them. I would definately start there. Just remember to fasten the lamp door back properly when you have finished changing the lamp. There is a safety switch that won't allow the set to come on if the door is not put back on properly. A lot of people forget to do this.

Not sure if this is the tv or what. Was watching this tv yesterday. Then suddenly all other channels except for the one I was on either had squiggly colored lines or 3 mirrored versions of the picture. Now...

Does it happen on other inputs? If so, reset the tv, sat or cable box, unplug power and try again. Play a dvd. Does it happen on a dvd? If not, there is an issue with your cable source. If it shows on dvd too, contact your tv manufacturer. You need a repair.

Sony KDF-E42A10 rear projection TV. Won't turn on.

Start by changing the lamp. If you got 5 years out of the old one, count your blessings, most folks only get three. The lamp is designed to be replaced by the consumer. Ebay will carry a replacement for you or you can get it directly from rivervalleyelectronics.net. They've got good prices. The lamp door is on the back. Its really easy, give it a shot.
