What exacting happened? If you need to install the rope and spring. Put the rope in the wheel and wrap it around it then place the wheel over the in its place. If it will not go all the way on just pull the rope a little and this will turn the wheel enough so it will properly go on.

How do you replace starter spring on mcculloch 1.2 chain saw

If yours is not repairable, you can buy the whole starter housing , or just the starter parts to repair your starter assembly. The actual spring can be mounted on the starter spindle, and using strong clips, can be held in place or using vice grips to hold in place once the spring is tensioned , and in place. Then match the starter spindle over the spring. Next the starter rope, will have to rewind completely once it is installed back on the saw. If not, you can tension the spring by holding the rope at the starter spindle, and twist the starter spring about 4 to 5 complete revolutions clockwise, and then winding the rope on by releasing the spring . You can find videos on youtube and other online video services, to get a visual of what I described.

Recoil spring problem

I have the same chainsaw and have never had a problem with it.

If you have changed the starter rope or recoil spring in the past, it is important that you hold the new spring with needle nose pliers and install it correctly. Once the spring is in make sure wind the rope correctly-clockwise. If not the new spring will be damaged.

Installing a spring in an MS240 Stihl chain saw

I have not worked on you type saw. I have put new starter springs in other saws. One end of the spring fits into the housing and the other in the pulley. Once you have that done there should be a notch in the pulley that you put the rope into that will allow the spring to be wound up without taking up the rope. It is a trial error problem now. If the spring is wound too tight you will not get full rope travel. If it is too loose tilt will not pull the rope in fully.

I have a Husqvarna 338. I'm having difficulty re-installing the pull rope. Is there a trick to it or a special tool.

There are no special tools required, with the pulley still connected its just a matter off threading the knotted rope through the starter pulley hole, hold the rope on the side of the pulley and turn the pulley to wind up the spring, allow the pulley to unwind pulling the rope in, with the rope fully extended make sure you still have at least half a turn left on the pulley, this will stop the spring coil binding.

How do you replace spring on a poulan chainsaw

A Poulan "P4018WT Gas Saw Type 1" IPL follows (may not be your saw):
http://www.ordertree.com/modelinfo/PWE/P4018WT-Gas-Saw-Type-1/75.P4018WT-Gas-Saw-Type-1.1.59.1.html
If yours is not a "Type 1" it can be found here:
Poulan.com
http://www.ordertree.com/modelinfo/POULAN-WEED-EATER/75.59.html
The dash number of your serial number is the type.

If the spring is unwound:
Recoil Spring Rewind
I invert and secure the starter housing and rewind the spring large coil to small (need eye protection and both hands). I am right handed so I tension the spring enough to insert it inside the previous coil while holding what has already been installed with my left about 180° from my right hand. The tension will hold the spring in the housing once completely rewound. Then bend slightly the inner most part to engage the starter spool. The video explains how to tension the spring.

Pull cord on chain saw will not retract.

Most of the rancher models are easy to look at. Take the four screws off that hold the starter cover on.When off have a look to see if the pulley is ok or one of the starter dogs(pawls) is jamed . If dogs ok take the screw out of the centre of pulley and remove it ,check for spring tension. if there is just be carful to leave sring in housing. look at spring if broken or out of shape renew it and rope.check for cracks in pulley. When renewing spring and rope get correct rope length and diameter. don't over tension new spring. hop this helps
