There can be a lot of reasons for it.
if you can open the CPU box, just open its one wing , and try to turn it on. if you can see the bulb glowing in the motherboard, its nothing wrong with SMPS and power supply, there might be problem with the power connection in the motherboard.
but if you cannot see the bulb glowing in mother board, there is a problem with the SMPS, so take your CPU to someone who can fix it.
Good luck

Automatic shutdown

Check the CPU Fan and make certain it is functional. Some computers do an auto-shutdown when the CPU reaches a certain heat ratio upon starting. Make sure the power conncetion is on firmly.

I have a compaq s5000nx that keeps shutting down and restaring after 20 min have not done any thing to it

Hello,

Open the case and blow any dust out of the heatsink (under the cpu fan). Overheating is the main cause of sudden shutdowns. You may also want to apply fresh thermal paste between the cpu and heatsink. Please let me know if this helps or not.

Automatic shutdown due to thermal event?is this the CPU fan?

Could be. It's just getting TOO hot in there. Listen and see if you can hear the fan working. Vacuuming out the CPU and all openings, case fan, power supply fan (vent) - as much as you can will ALWAYS improve heat related problems. Obviously, if you can not hear or see the fan working, you will know where the problem lies. If it the power supply fan, you will need a new power supply. Good luck. :)

Instantly shutdown

This sounds like it could be a heat issue. When you're in windows, you're using the processor more than if it just sits idle in BIOS. Using your cpu creates more heat. Make sure there is no dust in the fan or the heatsink on the cpu. Also, remove the heatsink and clean the old thermal grease compound off the heatsink and cpu and reapply fresh thermal grease.

When i send a print nothing happens. I opened the lid to check for a jam. nothing. but when i closed it the screen on mu printer says carriage jam.....

Sounds like the "deadly embrace" problem...

Computer says to itself "waiting on printer status"
Printer says to itself "waiting on computer status"
Results....nothing.

Try this:
1. Shutdown (using the normal operating system shutdown) the computer.
2. Turn off and unplug both the computer AND the printer at the same time.
3. Plug the printer back in first (and if necessary, turn it on) THEN
4. Plug in the computer and allow it to start normally.

Now try a print.
Let me know if this works for you.
