I try using the NENU option then targeting the caption key/icon which rarely works to eliminate the text mode band that appears across the tv. Oddly, the text mode indicator appears most frequently on channels 8 & 10. Crazy problem. The tv is an old giant screen and works well so would rather not replace but thsi problem is annoying. I'd appreciate your help.

Turn off closed-captioning. It's on and set to "text" mode now, and the set is blanking out the area where text should go. Your remote control probably has a single button for caption settings, and it got pressed at some time. It's easy to do. Just press it again until captions are turned off and the box will be gone.
You have two options with closed caption feature.
Captions of Text
A caption is a printed version of a dialogue narration and/or sound effects of a programme. Text is information not related to the programme that appears on half of the TV screen when available.
To view Caption or Text
Select the desired programme. Closed captioned programme are usually marked in your local TV listing as "CC"
Press CAPTION/TEXT repeatedly to select caption or text mode.
Press 1/2 to select the caption or text channel.
To turn to off the closed caption feature, press CAP/TEXT repeatedly until captions or text no longer display 0n-screen.
To enable close cationing on your TV follow this:-
Press "Menu" button on the remote control to appear "Setup" menu on the screen.
Use "Up and Down" arrows on the remote contol to select "Captions/Text" on your screen.
 Press "Right or Left " arrows to select any one of the following options. Caption-1, Caption-2, Caption-3, Caption-4 Text-1, Text-2, Text-3, Text-4.
Press enter to return TV viewing.
To turn the caption feature to "On" or "Off'
Press menu key on the remote control to display "Setup" menu.
Using "UP/DOWN" buttons to select captions on your screen.
Press "Right or Left" arrow to switch the captions feature 'ON" or "OFF" or "EZ Mute"
 Press enter to continue.
The box is probably because you have closed-captioning turned on and set to "text" mode. Check the TV remote control for a button marked "CC" or "CAPTION" or something similar. Press the button to cycle through captioning options until you get to "OFF". This should clear up the trouble.
What's happening is that in text mode, the TV blanks out the area on the screen where the text should go, but there's nothing to display. Text mode isn't widely used, but in some markets it's used to display weather or other information. What sometimes happens is that the caption button on the remote gets pressed and you don't know the TV is set to text mode until the box starts coming up. And it doesn't happen on every channel, or even all the time on the same channel, so it can seem very random.
I have heard complaints from some of my customers, “There is a black/gray box on my television, but I can still see the picture around the edges”. This happens to all of us and is a common symptom and can be fixed very easily. If you have a black/grey box in the picture, on the older sets they would be perfectly centered on the screen, but, on some of the newer sets the black/grey box can be in different places and can be different sizes on different sets. Most likely the Text mode is on in the Closed Caption menu. The way you can test if it is in Closed Caption Text mode, when you change the channels, the black/ gray box will not appear right away but it will take some time to show back up. This is a very good indication that the Closed Caption “Text” mode is turned on for your television. It just needs to be turned off. To turn off the closed caption go into your menu and turn off closed caption (CC). This will vary from manufacture to manufacture; it should be in the options menu. I have seen on some sets like Mitsubishi puts it under the Video adjustments button. So you may have to look around for it. You may even have a CC button on your remote, which will make it much easier. Just press the CC button until the display indicates that CC it is off. I hope that this tip helps you and that you enjoy your televisions for years to come. Thanks for using FixYa asnowman
The text function is normally part of the captioning portion of the menu. Go into the menu to captioning and turn the captioning off completely. If this does not eliminate the text box there are no quick fixes I am aware of.
To view captions or text:
1. Select the desired program. Closed captioned programs are
usually marked in your local TV listing as “CC.”
2. Press CAP/TEXT on the remote repeatedly to select caption or text mode.
3. Press 1/2 on remote to select the caption or text channel.
4. To turn off the closed caption feature, press CAP/TEXT
repeatedly until captions or text no longer display on-screen. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Fixya. Good luck
Check your TV's closed-caption settings. You'll likely find it's set for TEXT mode. Turn off captions or set for CC1 or CAPTION 1 if you want to use the captions. Your trouble is due to the set blanking out a block on the screen where the text should go, but there isn't any text to display. Most TV remotes have a single button for caption control, so it's easy to get into text mode without knowing it. Then on channels where captions are being broadcast you'll see the box. On other channels or programs you don't see it.
Please take a moment to give this solution a fixya rating if it clears up your trouble, and thanks for asking here!
You have the closed-captioning turned on and set to "text" mode. It's easy to do on Zeniths because many of their remotes have on button just to control the captioning. Go to the caption settings and turn it off or set it to "caption" mode if you want to use it. Then the box will be gone.
(What's happening is that in text mode, the screen is blanked out in the area where the text would go, but there isn't any text being sent by the station. On channels where no captioning at all is used, the box never shows up.)
It sounds like a text box that isn't receiving any text. If it covers almost the entire screen, then you might have accidentally got the settings into DEMO mode. It could also be a box for closed captioning, but that usually covers just the lower part of the screen. Either way, the solution is to go into the setup menu and restore facotry presets.
