It is easier when you also take the top off. Then you can put the belt over the roller and re-install it, then put the bottom plate back on, then turn it over, undo the motor and put the belt on the motor pulley, re-install the motor and put the rest back together. To remove the top, thewre are a couple of scres from the bottom, then from the top, remove the Hoover emblem, there is a screw there to remove and the top will come off.

Take the top cover off an remove the roller from the bottom.slip the belt over the roller and slide the end of the belt through the belt track, there is a small pully inside ,slide the belt under the pully and reinstall the roller and put the bottom back together.now go to the top, there are 2 screws holding the motor in place.take those 2 screws out an tilt the motor so you can put the belt on tthe geared motor shaft.put the motor back into place and put the 2 screws back in.now you can put the cover back on and secure it put the emblem back on and your ready to boogie

The belt has probably broken. Hoover says that the belt on this model should last the life of the vacuum, but that is rarely the case. They do wear and break. Changing the belt is simple and the belts aren't to much. You can get a replacement here:

How to install a U8172-900 belt

your savvy bagless has a geared belt. remove the bottom plate and then remove the 2 back screws near the back wheels to remove the top cover also peel off the hoover decal to access the top cover screw. this will expose all components to replace the belt.

How do I install the timing belt on my Hoover Savvy Vacuum? Modle # u8174-900 Where is it located?

This is a parts schematic for your hoover savvy. You have to take off the brush guard on the bottom and also the cover on top (there is a screw under the round hoover logo). You will then see how the belt is attached. Very easy to do. Hope this helps

Brush part not spinning

The hoover savvys have a reset button on the top of the hood, its to keep from destroying the belt. Simply press that button and the brush should start to turn.

If this does not solve the problem it is more than likely the belt (rubber band thingy :) ) in this case pull the bottom plate off again, but this time lift the brush out and slide it to the side and out from the belt. Then look inside the machine and get the belt off of the motor drive gear. Once the belt is out turn it inside out and make sure the teeth to the belt are all there. ( if they are not there will be burn marks.) If it is missing teeth simply replace that belt and you're back in business.

If it is not the reset and it is not the belt, some of those machines had bad switches in the handle. You will find that there is a circut board in the top handle which sends power to the vaccum motor but not the brushroller motor making it seem as if everything is running just fine. You will not be able to buy just the circut board, they come as an assembly and include the whole handle. Unfortunately there is no good way for someone unexperienced to tell wether there is power to the brushroller motor or not. In this case a Hoover service center would be able to assist you though you may end up paying a small labor fee.

Good luck!

U8174-950 SAVVY BEATER BAR NOT TURNING HOW DO I REPLACE BELT OR FIX BELT AND WHERE IS CLOSE SUPPLYER IN EDMONTON ALBERTA

Take the screws out from the plate covering the brush roll, look for maybe 2 screws from the bottom to take out, then turn vac over, remove the Hoover emblem and remove the screw there, now the top will come off and you can get to the belt and brushroll. Check around your local repair shops for a cogged belt for the Savvy. I would think someone would stock it. Alot of Sew and Vacuum stores also service and have parts.

Need help with my Hoover Savvy U8172-900 -- agitator does not spin when on

You probably jammed the roller brush and the gears on the motor stripped the teeth out of the drive belt.  You have to take the bottom and the top covers off the lower unit to replace the belt.  There is a hidden screw that keeps you from taking off the top, thus creates work for authorized Hoover repair shops.  You'll find that screw under the round red label in the center of the top of the lower section.  Peel it up and there is the screw.
