Laptop white screen

Having a laptop screen turn white is one of the most frustrating problems a user can experience since it prevents use of the laptop to find a solution.
A white laptop screen indicates a serious problem with the laptop's hardware, and no easy solution to this issue exists.
Just diagnosing this condition requires advanced computer knowledge.
Identification

With this problem, the laptop itself will power on and load the operating system as per usual, but the screen will become a complete, static white, according to LaptopRepair101.
No particular brand or make of laptop falls prey to this issue more than any other; it can happen to any laptop.

Causes
Since so many different brands and models of laptops exist, specific causes of a white screen vary from laptop to laptop.
The likely cause in most cases of a white screen on a laptop is a connection problem between the LCD screen and the video cable running from the motherboard.
The issue can also reside strictly with the motherboard or the screen might contain a defect.

Considerations Users can diagnose a white screen problem by opening up the laptop display case to determine whether a loose video connection on the back of the LCD screen exists.
Reconnecting the video cable should resolve the white screen; a video cable reconnection that does not fix the white screen narrows the root cause to a problem with the motherboard or the screen.

Motherboard Problems
The only way to determine if the laptop screen turns white due to a motherboard problem is to test out a different, working LCD screen with the laptop.
This requires the user connect the inverter board--the power supply for the LCD backlight and the video cable to the test LCD.
If the test LCD works with the motherboard, then the laptop's screen needs replacing; otherwise, a new motherboard is needed because there is no way to replace an integrated graphics card on a laptop motherboard.

Prevention/Solution
Taking apart a laptop screen may make some users feel uncomfortable, so you can use an external monitor connected to the VGA port common to most laptops if the processor and hard drive still work fine. Using an external monitor requires finding the proper function key command to toggle between the LCD and external monitor.
Warning
Taking apart the LCD screen on a monitor likely voids any manufacturer's warranty.
Consider visually checking the video connection to the laptop screen as a last resort if no other viable options exists.
The service manual that came with your laptop likely offers some tips to disassembling the computer, or conditions that could void the warranty.

How do I take out the screen on my HP G71 -329WM laptop

I have a HP Pavilion zv6000 laptop and have replaced both the screen and the hinges, plus a few friends laptop screens all the same way. First remove the battery and unplug the laptop. To replace the screen you will need to to remove the hard drive and remove all the screws form the underside of the laptop to allow access to the underside of the keyboard as the connectors for the screen are under the bezel above the keyboard. Opening the lid all the way will make it easier to get under the keyboard t and bezel then disconnect the power, video signal, and wifi connectors. Might be 1 or 2 or 3 separate connectors. Carefully removed the rubber plugs from the front of the screen and stored them so you didn't loose them. Using a small screwdriver, remove the screws under the plugs. Using a flat screwdriver or small thin blade, carefully separate the bezel around the outside of the screen, it may be glued together so take care not to crack the plastic. At this point would can see the screen screwed in to the hinges and the back of the lid and what screws need to be removed. The wifi antenna is usually attached to both the screen and the lid via tape so take care when removing the screen. Place the new screen back and attach the hinges and connectors, making sure to place the wifi antenna back where it was located properly. At this point I plug in the laptop and verify the HP logo or POST screen appears whe I turn it on, showing that the connections are ok before unplugging and continuing to replace the remaining screws, hard drive and finally battery. Depending on how the bezel around the screen is attached, you might want to use double stick tape as the glue no longer holds the front and back together around the screen. Depending on how mechanical you are, figure between 30 and 60 minutes to replace the screen the first time.

SCREEN WONT TURN ON

Connect an external monitor (CRT or LCD) to the laptop's "VGA-out" port. Then, turn your laptop on. Does it show the usual "start-up" screen, on the external monitor? If so, then either your laptop's screen is totally-dead, or the "LCD-inverter" (a $20 part that takes $50 for a technician to replace) needs replacement.

Or, does your laptop have a key-sequence (LCD-screen-only, LCD-and-external, external-only) that needs to be used to select LCD-only mode?

Gateway flat LCD dead

I'm not sure if your referring to the lcd monitor (gateway brand) or a laptop's lcd screen not working anymore.

1. if it's an lcd monitor...
a. test monitor in a different pc before assuming the problem is the lcd screen
b. replace the monitor if after testing monitor is in deed the item failing.

2. if it's the lcd screen from your gateway laptop.
a. you may be able to attach a regular analog monitor to the paralel port on your gateway.. test and see if the monitor that you attach will give you a picture (you may have to toggle with some some keys on your laptop keyboard to make have the signal going to the "externa" or attached monitor.
if the other monitor does not work either.. you video controller on your motherboard on your laptop may be failing and you may not have other options that to replace your laptop.
b. if the external/attached monitor works.. very likely the problem is the lcd screen for that you need to get a replacement and you may have to contact gateway to find out about pricing (or places to send your laptop for service if you're still within warranty). if you have an old laptop you may have to considere simply replacing the unit as buying a new lcd screen may very likely be more expensive than the same working laptop.

Laptop Screen is broken

Laptop screens are usually very pricey to fix. Chances ar eyou will need a new one , and the price of a new one + labor for someone to install it usually isn't worth it. For the same price you can purchase a brand new one!

Hi my dv6000 laptop screen just stuffed up i cannot see the screen hardly at all its dimed pretty badly, the only way i can see the screen is if theres direct light on it.

Your inverter has died. They can be replaced quickly and easily at any laptop repair center or you could do it yourself if you are keen to get inside of your screen.

If you want to get into the screen, you will still need to find a replacement inverter anyway.

Hope that helps.. Just post back if you need more info.
