Question about Whirlpool Washing Machines

1 Answer

My Oasis washer started flashing a F51 code. Reading online I found that the RPS sensor needed cleaned. I removed and cleaned the sensor and now the code is not flashing F51 anymore, but now the tub doesn't turn. Did I put something together wrong? It spins freely by hand, but won't turn during a cycle. Please let me know what you think. Thanks.

There is a second connector with a bunch of brown wires down by the RPS sensor. Did that come loose? Also if you remove the 3 phillips screws in the back side of the console, you may find one of those connectors has been unplugged on the top side?

What does error code 51 mean?

I found this on the internet. May be of some help.

The F-51 error code on this washer indicates that the machine control board in the console detects a motor RPS (Rotor Position Sensor -- tachometer) failure. This can be caused by a number of different problems. You could have a bad RPS sensor, a failed motor, a wire harness connection problem or an item stuck between the spin basket and the outer tub that is interfering with spin basket rotation. A water filling problem could also cause this code to be displayed since the basket would have excessive friction if water is not entering the machine properly. With the washer off, spin the basket to see if it rotates freely. If you detect resistance or suspect that an item is stuck between the basket and the outer tub, you will likely need to remove the basket and check this area. The procedure for removing the basket is shown in the first image below. Remove the basket and check for foreign objects or debris.

If the basket spins freely, make sure that your water supply cut-off valves are fully open. Shut off the water supply and remove the hoses from the connections on the back of the washer. Place the ends of the hoses in a bucket and briefly turn on the water supply to check the flow and water pressure coming from the end of the hoses. Check the inlet water valve screens for deposits or debris that could interfere with the water fill. The motor will begin to spin the basket before the washer completes the filling function. If the filling is slow, it could cause the F-51 code.

If the water supply is okay, you could have a wire harness connection problem, failed RPS sensor or a number of other failures. If you are technically advanced and have a volt/ohm meter, you can use the technical information provided in the third image to try and diagnose your likely failure. NOTE: This information is intended for technicians. Follow electrical safety guidelines when using this information.

Unplug the washer

to disconnect electrical power before accessing internal components. Internal metal edges in the washer can be sharp. Protective gloves are recommended.

I recommend that you

unplug the washer

and access the control board first. Check the wire harness connections on the P10 and P5 plugs first. Measure the resistance through the motor and the RPS sensor as shown below. This may point you in the direction of your failure.

This is often a difficult failure to diagnose and repair in an Oasis washer. If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician.

Leaking and F51 error code on my Kemore Elite Oasis Washer

The F51 error code indicates that the control is not sensing proper motor movement through the signals from the RPS (rotor position sensor) circuit.
This can be caused by several different problems.
Make sure that you are not overloading the washer.
Overloading can cause this problem. A toy or foreign object could be under the washer that is interfering with motor rotation. With the washer empty, spin the basket inside the washer tub to see if it spins relatively easily.

If not, you could an item caught between the spin basket and the tub. You could have a wire harness problem causing signals to not be transmitted properly between the RPS and the machine control board.

A failed RPS sensor or a failed control board could also cause this problem.

F51 error

Hello, the F51 code is a motor rotor position sensor failure. It's best to call in the warranty service as there is a bunch of tests that need to be run to determine if it's the sensor or control board. If the tech wasn't any help, contact the store for a replacement.

Thanks

Codes

Motor RPS Failure (rotor position sensor)
F then 51 flashes when there is a motor rotor position sensor failure.
The overheating of the motor sensor is caused by use of excessive detergent. This washer can detect suds and try to correct. Upon doing so it causes the motor to work more and overheat which causes the RPS to fail.

My kenmore oasis he is flashing f51 and it wont drain. help!!!!

The F51 fault code on these types of washers indicates that the machine control board detects an RPS (Rotor Position Sensor) failure. This sensor is on the motor at the bottom of the washer.
Here is the troubleshooting for the F51 fault code:
  • Do not overload the washer. Overloading can cause this fault code.
  • Check underneath the washer for any clothes or toys that could be under the washer and obstructing the motor from turning freely. This can occur because there is not a cover on the bottom of the Washer.
  • Using too little water by choosing the wrong cycle for the type of load being washed can cause this fault code.
  • Make sure that your drain hose is properly installed per your installation instructions. Siphoning of fill water out of the washer can cause tub resistance and will result in this fault code.
  • Lift the lid and reach in and make sure that the basket turns freely. If not, you could have garments stuck between the two baskets or a problem with the basket hub. Any abnormal resistance to tub movement can cause this fault.
  • Unplug the washer. Make sure that both the Control Board Connectors P5 (Motor Wires, red, blue and yellow), and the P10 (RPM Sensor Wires, 7 brown wires) are securely plugged into the Control Board.
  • Remove the (P5) Motor Connector from the Control Board and take a resistance reading between the 3 combinations of motor wires (red/blue, red/yellow and blue/yellow). It should read around 32 ohms on the Motor Windings between any of the 3 pins on the harness. NOTE: If you do not get the proper resistance reading on the motor harness at the board, check the reading at the motor end. If you get a good reading replace the upper or Lower Harness whichever is defective. If the reading is still bad when checked directly off of the motor, then you will need to replace the motor. (See notes below for motor access.)
  • Unplug the P10 connector and take a resistance reading between the two outside pins (1 and 7). It should read between 600 and 21.6K ohms. *NOTE: (If it reads open you will need to pull the Rotor and Stator so you can check it right at the RPS Sensor. If it reads good at the sensor replace the Lower, or Upper Harness whichever is open).
  • To access the motor and RPS sensor, lean the washer back against the wall. Secure the washer with blocks if needed. Remove the rotor (1-bolt), and the stator (4-bolts). When you pull the rotor off, check to make sure that the thin plastic beads that run between each magnet on the rotor is intact and in place. This could cause an F51 code as it will no longer separate the poles of the magnet for the sensor to read them properly.
  • Check your wiring connections on the motor and the RPS sensor. Unplug and then plug the wiring harness connections back in on these components 5 or 6 times. This will normally scrape through any possible corrosion or deposits on the connections. Tug slightly on the connections when they are inserted for the final time to make sure that they are secure.
  • Reassemble the washer .

Hope this helps .
