Why, most new computers will find the hard drive and set the settings. You can get on line to Maxtor and get the setting off the internet...

Maxtor 80gb external drive bleeps when powered up and not able to access

This is a well known symptom, it's called the "musical maxtor" symptom.

The bleeping occurs because you damaged your drive, either by dropping it, bumping it, or just from excessive wear and tear. The drive detects this and warns you with the bleeps.

All the data is most likely lost, and you will need to replace the drive.

Maxtor hd makes alot of noise stoped working

Depending on the age of the computer or hard drive itself, the hard drive may still be under warranty. What I recommend is to call Maxtor and see if they can do a warranty replacement of the hard drive. It sounds as if this hard drive may have failed completely. It would be a good idea however to take the hard drive to a reputable computer repair shop in your town and see if they can recover any data you may need from the hard drive. They may charge a little bit to do it, but it may be the only way to save any data you may really need. If Maxtor sends you a new hard drive or if you buy a new one, you should be able to reinstall Windows or whatever operating system you have currently installed. If you made a recovery disk for your computer then you should be able to use it to install the operating system. If no disk, the computer repair shop may have a disk that can be used to install the operating system. They may want you to bring in the computer (as there is a sticker on it that has a product key for the operating system (if Microsoft, and if it is a factory built computer)). I hope that this information helps you. Let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

My computer is running very slow. So I ran test of my Maxtor 6Y160M0 hard drive using the computer's "PC-Doctor" software. The 'linear' test failed, giving me an error code the instructions...

the drive is going bad
Try to format the Maxtor.
NOTE: obviously backup all important data to a removable drive or CD.
You will have to reinstall windows. so before doing this, make sure that you have the cd and Product key (usually on CD case).

Purchased Maxtor ONE TOUCH III. when I had XP. Now that I have Vista, mAXTOR DOESN'T RECOGNIZE IT. iS THERE AN UP-DATE? nEED HELP. Thanks Marty xmartico@san.rr.com

Hey xmartico,

If your recent update from Windows XP to Windows Vista has been the only major change to your computer system since you could access your Maxtor One Touch III last, you may simply need to reinstall the Maxtor software to resolve the problem.

Information provided by the manufacturer has suggested that if no password was ever set, the hard drive should work with Vista immediately with no additional work required. If you had chosen a password however, you may need to reinstall the software and reboot every time you disconnect/shut down the external drive, or disable your user account control (UAC). Please keep in mind though that disabling UAC is strongly discouraged, as it may open your computer to attacks by various malware programs including viruses and spyware.

If you're still not quite sure how to proceed, I would strongly recommend contacting Maxtor directly for further assistance.

Hope this helps you out.

Sincerely,
Aaron
