    Hello,

    I have a very similar problem with my Gateway desktop. After moving, I tried to hook up my computer but there was a problem. Everytime I go to turn on the cpu the light will turn on..but its only a yellow light. The monitor light turns on green as well but a msg comes on the screen saying "Power Saving Mode." I have tried un-plugging and re-plugging everything as suggested but that didn't work for me. Please Help. Thanks

You might be facing a short circuit, bad power supply or a miss connection ( inverted connector for example). Usually i'd turn the pc on only with the indispensable: Main Board( including CPU and RAM, nothing else) and wait to see if the power supply stays on, if it does, start adding devices one by one till you locate the defective one.( check the position of connectors).

You may have to deal with setup.

Be aware of Electro Static Discharge( very dangerous for your pc).

Note: .You have to turn off the power supply before you plug in anything, for example: connect the hard drive, works ? . turn off,
plug in graphics card, turn on, works ?, turn off ..., same procedure for all devices.

Please excuse my english.

It could be that your motherboard might be dead. Do you plug your pc into a surge protector, as sometimes there could be a surge of power that could blow circuits on the mobo. Did your computer BEEP at you. I know that sounds daft but all pc do a post b4 booting and if there is a problem the computer BEEPs, not exaclty handy as it tells you there is a prob, but not what it is.
Is the pc still under warranty. If it is then go to makers site and ask the tech guys there. If not, are you competent to take pc apart and check the internal components. It could be something simple to fix, like a loose processor fan, power couplings coming loose, or possibly your RAM has blown.

if you can supply any more details than whats in your post it would help out alot.

I have a dell studio 540 desktop, I need to restore to factory settings but my monitor will not stay open. It opens for a few seconds then immediately goes into power saver mode and turns off, how can

I see two things here, but need clarification;

1) Monitor goes to Power Saver Mode, then turns -> OFF?

Sure that monitor didn't go into Standby Mode?

2) Why are you performing a restore back to factory settings?
Pick up a virus?

Primer;
The monitor receives a signal. A video signal. The video signal comes from the computer.

If the monitor is NOT receiving a video signal, then the monitor will state No Signal.
This is for older monitors.

New monitors do not state No Signal anymore.
It's Power Saver Mode, or Sleep Mode.

If the monitor is truly OFF, the Power On button will Not be lit up.
Or the Power On LED light on the monitor.

Monitor power on LED is lit, or Power On button is lit?

Monitor is not receiving a video signal;

Use a monitor cable from a KNOWN to be working monitor, for a temporary test.
OR,
Use a Known to be working monitor, and it's monitor cable.

Need to find out if monitor cable is good.

Monitor cable checks out good?

Then problem is computer.

The two leading issues with desktop computer failure, is;

1) Computer is dirty inside
2) Power Supply inside computer is bad.

Please post back in a Comment.

My monitor shuts down after one second.

Dell monitors automatically go into power-save mode after a preset amount of time when the computer is inactive. The Dell monitor will go completely black, instead of showing a screensaver. This doesn't mean that your Dell computermag-glass_10x10.gif has shut down. Instead, this allows your monitor to essentially turn off until it's needed again. You can change how long it is before the Dell monitor goes into power-save mode by changing your display settings.
  1. Step 1 Press any key on your keyboard or move your mouse. Either will turn off power-save mode. Alternately, you can press the power button on your Dell computer tower or laptop.
  2. Step 2 Press any key a second time if the monitor goes from power-save to stand-by mode. Stand-by mode allows the screensaver to appear.
  3. Step 3 Enter your user name and password into the login prompt if your computer requires a login. Press "Enter" to begin using your Dell computer.
  4. Step 4 Change the display settings on your Dell monitor to prevent your monitor from going into power-save mode prematurely. Right-click anywhere on your desktop and choose "Properties." Click the "Screensaver" tab and press "Power." Beside "Turn off Monitor," choose a time amount from the drop-down list and press "Apply."

Screen goes black. the power light is on, but the picture goes out. if i turn the power off, then on again it comes back for about 5 seconds, then goes black again.

Check to see if this problem follows in safe mode. Reboot and when the Dell splash screen comes up tap F8 until you see the multiboot options. Scroll to "safe Mode with Networking" let the machine boot up and see if you have a screen. If you do, right click on the desktop and set the resolution to 800 X600 and reboot normally. Usually when a screen goes blank in normal mode but shows up in safe mode means you have an incompatible resolution for the monitor or graphics adapter. This may be a driver issue or hardware. If the screen boots up in normal mode at the lower resolution, then try and go to properties again and bump the resolution up a bit, if it blanks again, try to go online and update the driver for the graphics chip.

Monitor keep going into "sleep" mode

Check the power setting in control panel of windows. If you have a monitor from another computer swap them and see if the problem stays with the computer or monitor.

Stand by mode

Check the display cables , and if you have one test a different monitor on your computer.

If this is not a sceen problem, then it is an internal fault possibly the motherboard.

Try first leaving the PC power cord unplugged for ten, fifteen minutes and check if PC restarts afterwards.

Well it boots up and works well but after about a half a hour or so it goes into like a hybernation or stand by mode and we have to turn off the cpu and turn it on. i just want to know how to keep it on.

Go to the control panel and then go to power option, then set the power settings to desktop or set the monitor and hard disk to never so it wont turn of.

Is this a Software/Config/Hardware Problem ?

hmmm..sounds like a sleep or screen saver conflict...try booting up on Safe mode(F8) on turn on, and then see how that works. Set your screen saver for Never, and see what happens.

You may be hitting a thermal issue with your video circuitry.

Laptop screen died

Try pressing F8 at boot up see if the safe mode menu comes in. If it does boot into safe mode and once in windows change the screen properties i.e uninstall as when you reboot in normal mode the windows will recognize the monitor and install drivers for it. If you cannot see the sub menu after pressing F8 then there is possibly a power supply to the monitor problem or the monitor is faulty. You can get reconditioned units for this laptop will try eBay first. Check out the prices then decide to proceed or replace.

Thanks J
