You probably need to update or inatall a driver for your sound card. If your Compaq came with the Creative Sound Blaster you can get the driver from www compaq.com or from Creative.com If not you have to find the model number for your sound card
take a look at your quick launch tool bar (the little arrow nex to the clock.) run your pointer over each one of them and see if any of the audio device is running. if so, right click on theicon and exit or close.

you have to download the sound drivers and install the software..can't give you the exact driver as haven't specified much about your PC. still try to download one of the common driver like realtek- Ac97... from the following URL .. http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=14&PFid=23&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false
or try to download other audio drivers and install it...your problem would be fixed.
