Ethernet controller driver

I have an acer aspire sa90 desktop and have upgraded the os from vista basic to home premium, however i cannot connect to the internet due to ethenet the in controller driver missing. i can't find the manufacturer of the controller to aid me in searching for the correct driver.
The properties window states that it is an unknown device.
I have done a search of the upgrade disc from within the controller properties installer program but it fails to find a relevant driver.
I can't access the internet therefore am contacting yourselves via another pc that i have access to.

I have tried several disc but no luck, windows diagnostics tells me that there is no network adapter installed and configured.

  • rottitera Jul 11, 2008

Yes i have been down that road but a; it can't search internet and there is nothing compatible on the discs or h/drive, It worked before the upgrade but now am stuck.

I thought of that but was dubious in case an incompatibility issue crashed the system, what are the chances of that happening?

  • rottitera Jul 11, 2008

Ok, will go for that, it will take me a while, is there any indication as to what type of driver each one is in the list, or is there any way of telling which drivers are for that particular device?

Thank you for all your help mdwrig2, i finally got to the bottom of it, the adapter card had gone faulty so i fitted a new one and hey presto job done.

I found the correct driver for the original hardware but it still woudn't allow a connection so i began to suspect the hardware, i then tried the new lan card and the connection was a doddle to establish,

By putting this comment in i hope it will have some useful bearing for anyone who suffers from a similar problem, thanking you once again, cheers!

are you familiar with device manager? if so, is there a device in there with a yellow question mark by it? you can right click it and try selecting Update Driver.

  • Mike Wright Jul 11, 2008

what if you do the update driver, but choose the driver to install, instead of the automatic option? there may be one that will work

  • Mike Wright Jul 11, 2008

very slim. if it did shut the system down... due to a wrong driver being installed, you can easily boot into safe mode and uninstall the ethernet card in device manager and start over.

It may be an Intel, or Realtek, those are very common. The actual driver should be something named similar to 10/100 fast ethernet adapter

Replace the Vista Home Premium with XP on ASPIRE M1202

Your best option is to upgrade to Windows 7. It is free for (I believe all) Vista users, and you can run programs in XP compatibility mode.

How to put xp home edition on an acer aspire 17" laptop which currently has vista home basic on

First and foremost before you try to downgrade your OS from Vista to XP make sure that you can find a working device driver for your laptop, if you check your manufacturer's website(Acer) see if they have XP drivers for your device because I had some clients that are having problem trying to make some of their device work(built in webcam, ethernet, wi-fi, sound) when they downgraded to XP for faster processing.
