BRAKES WITH ONLY 19000 MILES ON MY 2006 ELANTRA THE BRAKES STARTING SQUEALING. I TOOK IT IMMEDIATELY TO THE DEALER. HE SAID THE BACK BRAKE SHOES NEED TO BE REPLACED. IT APPEARED TO ME AND MY HUSBAND THAT ON THE BACK PASSENGER SIDE BRAKE THAT THE SHOE ON ONE SIDE OF THE DISC WAS ALMOST GONE BUT ON THE OTHER SIDE THE SHOE STILL HAS PLENTY OF WEAR LEFT. THE DEALER SAID JUST NEW BRAKE SHOES BUT I THINK SOMETHING IS NOT ADJUSTING WITH THE CALIPHERS. THE OTHER SIDE BRAKE SHOES STILL HAVE PLENTY OF WEAR. EVER HEARD OF THIS ISSUE? THANKS

Sounds like you have drum brakes in the rear....if so....find a safe place to put your car in reverse and slowly accelerate until traveling about 7 miles per hour...don't try and read you speedometer while driving in reverse...it won't register when traveling backwards...just guess when your at about 7 miles per hour....then slam your brakes on to stop as quick as you can...repeat about 4 or 5 times.
Drum brakes have a self tightening device that is supposed to work it's magic every time you brake while traveling in reverse.
I think your rear drum brakes are lose because you hardly ever drive in reverse, am I right?...I suspect.it is those lose brake shoes rattling, making occasional contact with your brake drums.

If the sound persists after the first 5 back up and stops...try it 5 more times...then test again....if the sound is gone...good...now you know how to fix it when it happens again....
Or... if it sounds like you made an improvement by reducing the noise/sound....repeat the back up and stop thing until it is gone or at a level that seems acceptable....because by being lose and bouncing against the drums...the brake shoes might not immediately be able to be set back to the closest setting....because they were unevenly worn from the bouncing...
In this case....adjust them until no more improvement is being made....then in two weeks....do the back up and stop thing again to set the brake shoes where they should be....now you should hear very little to no noise......but....
If the sound still happens....have a mechanic at a brake shop inspect it....good luck and make sure there isn't any thing laying lose in the car or trunk that will fly when you hit the brakes to adjust the brake shoes....be safe ...find a big open area to do the reverse...then brake hard thing...an open area where no one else is around to get in your way....a place where there are no poles trees or curbs to hit...a place where there is a paved surface to do it on...like a parking lot at an abandoned super market or plaza....chose your place to do it carefully and think about what you could hit or what you could run over before starting....just be safe....

The brake pads are grabbing due to moisture, I would replace them with a set of high quality after market ones to stop this problem.

If the key has a chip and the car has an anti-theft system the chip may have failed in the key.
The brake warning light could be a faulty sensor for the hydraulic brakes or the parking brake.

hi sounds like good advice with out your rear brakes working properly all the load will be transfered to the front brakes causing uneven braking and in wet or slippery conditions front wheels will start locking up causing lose of control

When brakes approach the point where they need quick replacement you will hear a high-pitched squealing noise whenever you apply the brakes. This is caused by "wear sensor" material in the pads/shoes that's designed to get your attention. Your problem is more likely either clutch or transmission related.

your rear brakes set your emergency brake system, to the proper required settings, your e brake system sounds to be the problem, the brake shop is liabl for this so bring it to a dealer and hav it serviced properly, you are having mechanics "pull the wool over it" basicially your being screwed, go back to sears and speak with a manager before having the dcar fixed properly.

You need to install a better quality brake shoes/pads. I have a van that did the same thing and after installing better shoes all was fine. If you have a shop do the work you mustspecify that you need high quality pads and or shoes installed. Many shops will install the cheapest ones..

Easiest way first.....if the belt is squealing (at idle), spray it with belt dressing or WD-40.....if it stops....may be the belt or the bearings in the alternator....if it continues only with driving.....brake wear indicator letting you know...brake job due!

The first think I would do is check to make sure you have enough brake fluid to operate the brake caliper. Should be a simple fluid check under your hood. If it is low, then your brakes will be spongy and the car will take much longer to stop. If problem persists definitely have a mechanic or the dealer check this out as it is very dangerous when you can't stop!

I was once told that the squeeling comes form the edges of the brakle pads vibrating when you stop. To fix it, remove the drum and sand off the edges of the brake pad. If you want to get serious, taper the edges of the pads with a grinder. Some Brake pads and shoes come tapered right out of the box. Be conservative only remove a little bit of material.
