Canon powershot A640 wont turn on

There is rust on one of the terminals in the battery compartment. I think this is the reason for no power. Can you give me advice on how to clean it?

My camera still will not power on!!!! I have tried the steel wool, yes, it did clean everything up, but the camera still won't turn on. What else could be wrong?

Do you have an estimate of how much this would cost?

If the rust in the compartment is from a leaking battery, then usually cleaning the contacts takes care of the problem. If the reason for hte rust is that the camera got wet, there is likely corrosion inside the camera that will not be fixable other than to replace the boards. Typically, this will be more expensive than replacing the camera.

The unfortunate part here is that Canon doesn't provide anyone other than authorized service centers with service information. The parts will be available only to those serice centers. Try calling one to get a rough estimate.

I don't think that there is much you can do with this camera yourself.

If the rust hurt the camera that bad, I would just recommend buying a new one. Repair costs are ridiculous.

Did a battery purge(explode) inside it ?
If it did or was corroded for an extended period then the copper contacts might have been broken inside the camera(part that connects to the circuit) If a batter purged then the damages may have gotten in further
If cleanin the outside didnt solve the problem then its diffinately broken inside or the problem is far worse. In any case the camera will need to be opened and serviced. If you have the time and knowledge then by all means give it a go if not then i suggest you send it to a service technician in your area

If there is noticeable rust on the terminal, then there is more than likely rust and corrosion on the inside as well. Take it to a camera shop and have it professionally cleaned. They will open it up and clean it inside and out.

" If the corrosion is small use the eraser at the end of a pencil. There used to be some pens with erasers, those were better because they are a bit harder. Otheerwise some vinegar in a q-tip works very well. Just remember to dry it or let it evaporate."

My canon powershot A640 wont turn on despite having new batteries installed, also the USB connector socket has fallen inside the camera, will this cause a short that will stop it powering

Yes, you are probably right. A short within the camera could make it "un-startable. Take it to a local electronist or a Canon dealer and they will help you solve this problem. Also check if the batteries are good and fully charged. Some new batteries could be faulty from the factory.

Canon PowerShot A640 lens problem

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ... Here are some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try.

I have a canon powershot A640 when you press the on button it wil

Your problem may be due to corrosion on the battery contacts inside the camera which can prevent the full power of the batteries from flowing into the camera. Try this free fix before you do anything else: remove the batteries and wipe the camera contacts firmly with a dry cloth (heavy corrosion may require cleaning with a wire brush, steel wool, or sandpaper). Remove any residue that may have fallen into the battery compartment during cleaning, then wipe both ends of the batteries and place them back in the camera. This cleaning clears the problem about 90% of the time. If it doesn't work for you, chances are that your camera may have a problem that requires professional repair.
