Hi,
How much memory your Windows OS will recognize depends on which version of Windows you are running. 32-bit versions of Windows will see (and utilize) only 3GB or 3.5GB. To utilize more memory, install a 64-bit version of your OS. More information about OS memory maximums can be found at... Click here

let me know if you need any further help.

Use the link bellow to find the max memory and the type of memory. The memory chips are located under a panel on the bottom of the machine.

Once you have the modules, open the RAM cover at the back of the laptop. Replace the modules following simple procedure in user manual (thnks Leet) Check page 75 of Manual (page 98 on PDF).
Remember to grab the modules by their sides, do not touch the chips and circuits.
Remove battery and disconnect adapter from laptop while replacing the modules.

I want to upgrade the graphics card on my acer aspire m3400 but can not locate the card on the motherboard

That's because the video is integrated into the motherboard. This PC supports HDMI... what exactly are you trying to 'upgrade'? If the on-board video is not performing as you want, from what you can see here, you may only need to upgrade RAM on your MB:

http://support.acer.com/acerpanam/desktop/2010/acer/Aspire/AspireM3400/AspireM3400sp2.shtml

#4 at the bottom of the page:
Shared system memory may be allocated to support integrated graphics, depending on system memory size and other factors. Actual system memory available to the operating system will be reduced by the amount of dedicated and shared system memory utilized by the graphics solution and resources required by the operating environment.

Memory upgrade a Acer Aspire 7520 Notebook

It will be nearly the same, even if the memory is different.
Download the manual by clicking on it. when you open PDF page put number 98 (page number75 in document) in the page number box at the bottom of the document.
It will open a page with instructions and a picture of the memory door. If you replaced memory on a laptop you should be able to repeat procedure, only big difference is memory specs and position of RAM door.
