LENS ERROR my Nixon camera was working fine one moment, I was taking pictures and then after I turned it off, I went to turn it back on and it starting zooming and making the urghtt noice as it focused in and out. it does that several times and then the lens error notice shows up on the screen. then i press power and it turns off, but when i turn it back on, the same thing happpens. In the LCD display at the back the image we try to take looks like a pic in a TV with bad signal, I tried to clean the lens with soft cloth but no use, Think this must be due to the light sensor inside the camera, WHAT TO DO???

This seems to be a problem with switch and the sensor inside the camera, Some time it works on magicaly like nothing has happend, After having this problem I have to on & off the lens for 3 or 4 times and clean the lens and 3 small holes in the front ( i don't know what's that for but after cleaning it works perfect ) I know this is not the permanent solution, If some can tell i will be happy.

I have the same problem with my nikon coolpix s200. After 2 months the lens of my camera won't go inside. On the lcd screen stood lens error. I went to a shop with this problem. He took the battery out of my camera and press the off and on button for a while. Then he put the battery back in the camera and press the on button. The lens of the camera was now going inside en outside and inside and outside with a strange noise. And also on the screen stood lens error. Okey, the lens is inside the camera. But how can I fix this camera? What is the problem? What have you done? Please let know..!!

My nikon s200 did the same thing, i took it back to best buy and they sent it to the repair place and wanted to charge me $150 to fix it because the lens is broken and they say that i dropped it but i DIDN'T! Best Buy and Walmart and Target don't even sell this camera anymore, there has to be a reason why. My camera is still under warranty but they say that is for defects and that this isn't just a defect, so i would have to pay the 150 for them to fix it. They said they took 15 dollars off the repair price already but that would mean it would be 175 to fix. I DIDN'T EVEN PAY THAT MUCH TO BUY IT TO BEGIN WITH! i need to call nikon and see what they can do with the manufacters warranty. Now finding out that i am not the only one with this problem makes me dissappointed in Nikon

I was taking pictures, but paused for a moment to find a better angle. I guess I got distracted for a few minutes. I went back to the camera to see that the screen was black. I thought it had turned itself...

Hi. Yes, that happened to me once. Battery went dead and doesn't have enough power left to retract the lens. Camera worked fine after I put in charged battery. I hope this is your case too.

First a black screen, then a lens error

For the lens error:

For the black pictures (after you've corrected the lens error):

Note, if you're going to try fix 5a on the above blog page, do it with the camera turned off to lessen the chance of damaging the lens.

The better solution is to send it to Canon's service people.  They can fix he problem is the fixes at the above site won't work.

Won't turn on and lens is out.

Sounds like you might have gotten some pocket lint in the lens barrel. The following blog outlines some repair options for a lens error:
