Hi beccarkt,

Although not sold at Best Buy™, there are available adapters/cables to make this transfer possible. I recommend using a search engine to find "firewire to usb." Hopefully this will give you the results you need.

Thank you,

External drive not picked up on computer

External hard drives not only provide additional storage space on a computer system but also allow data to be conveniently transported from one computer to another.

These drives typically plug right in to a port on the computer and function without any additional setup; however, if you are running into trouble where your external hard drive is not being detected, you must troubleshoot the situation to determine why the drive appears to be missing.

Check the USB connection running from the hard drive to your computer.

If the USB cable is not seated securely in the port, the computer will not detect the external drive.

Disconnect the USB cable from the computer and plug it into a different USB port. Occasionally, a USB port will fail to function with some hardware and changing the USB connection may correct this issue.

Switch from a USB to a Firewire cable connection, if possible.

The USB port on the hard drive may have died; if so, changing to a Firewire connection will resolve this issue.

Install the driver for the external device from the installation disc provided with the product. Older computer systems may require you to manually install this driver.

After inserting the installation CD, follow the prompts from the installation wizard to install the driver on your computer.

Restart the computer.

If you connected the external drive while the computer is powered down, it may not recognize the device when you turn on the computer.

After restarting the computer, connect the external drive to the system.

The drive should now be detected by your operating system.

Connect the external hard drive to a power source and then plug it into your PC computer using a USB or Firewire cable.

Log on to your PC computer using an account with administrative privileges.

Open the Start menu and click on the "Control Panel" icon.

Open the "Administrative Tools" folder and then double-click on the "Computer Management" icon.

Select "Disk Management" from the list of options on left side of the window.

Right-click on the drive you want your computer to recognize and select "Change Drive Letter and Paths."

Select a drive letter for the external hard drive to be recognized as and click "OK."

The drive will now appear in My Computer.

Hope this helps.

I have an avastor hdx -400 20gb external hard drive. No usb port! Just firewire. How can I connect the avastor to my pc from firwire port to usb port! Jeremy

Looks like a simple converter would do it. Might want to look into possible performance loss with it, though.

I have a Smartdisk External Hard Drive Model FWFP120 and I need the cable that goes to this. Does any one know where I can find this cable ? Also, what type of cable is this ? It's not a USB Cable -

It is a firewire cable and you can get one at best buy or radio shack. You will need a computer that has a firewire port however. They are different from USB and not all computers have them

Mhy maxtor external hard drive is not being recognized by my computer. What do I need to do?

Does it work when connected to a different computer?
If not, is it still under warranty?
If not, disassemble the case, and you'll find an "internal" MAXTOR disk-drive inside the case; try connecting that drive as a "slave" disk-drive inside your computer. If it is not recognized, then it is "dead" and you should take a hammer to it, so that any of your personal data on it will become impossible for any "identity-thief" to read, and then buy a new, larger, external drive.

I recently purchased an external hard drive, and how do connect it to my computer.

External Hard Drive is mostly of the USB interfacing type. If urs one is the same, then it is just as simple as plugging in a pen drive in the USB port. If it has external power supplies then u can easily figure out how to connect. There are two parts in the power supply (if external power supply cable is provided), 3-pin main power supply connector and other is the adapter which goes to the external hard drive.plug in the other end of the adapter into the hard drive (there is a hole in it). connect the main power cable to the adapter extension. now for the usb Hard Drive, connect the USB cable to the USB port of the computer. Switch on the power supply to the Hard drive and u r ready to use ur brand new External Hard Drive. If it is a Firewire interfacing one then u may need to open the CPU box, and then connect the firewire connector on to the motherboard firewire port. It is easy to identify, it is a red colored port/connector.

Hooking up My Book to my computer

Your MyBook has a choice of connections, either USB or firewire. You only want to connect the USB. Perhaps someday, you will want to connect to a computer with a firewire port, but without an available USB port, and your MyBook will be able to.

LaCie FireWire drive

I would seek out the latest drivers for the card in addition to checking to see the firewire card is properly installed. I would test the cable with another or ports. The D2 has a various array and combination of Firewire ports on each model. Also, try bringing the drive to another computer, to eliminate all other variables. Always of course, properly eject external hardrives and wait for confirmation whenever disconnecting it from the computer, and allow the drive to spin down before turning it off.
