There are several things you can do to increase the speed of your computer and they involved just a bit of housecleaning.

1. Defrag: Useful, but not vital. There is no reason to avoid doing it is you systems uses NTFS. It still works the same way.

2. System cache: Change your system cache to 3 times the size of your RAM and make sure the min and max are identical.

3. Clean out all temporary files: With no programs running, run a search for al files ending in .tmp and delete them. Do the same for files beginning with "~" go to your temporary internet folder and delete every folder you find in the following hidden area: documents and settings\[your username]\\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 and delete all folders located here.

Note: This is a hidden location and you will not be able to view it unless you type the full path in the address bar. Changing your folder settings to unhide system files will not make the content.ie5 folder viewable.

4. MSconfig: Go to the “Start” button, and then select “Run” and type in “msconfig” and hit enter. Select the “Startup” tab and uncheck any programs that you do not want to run in the background. Experiment with this a few times to get a good mix of useful programs vs. turning off unwanted ones. Rebooting makes these changes take effect. Be sure to check the box not to get the nag popup when it shows up when you log in again for the first time. Keep in mind most of these programs are pointless and only server to preload software into memory to trick you into thinking they are running faster than they actually do. In fact, they slow down everything else running on your system.

5. Desktop: Remove all programs, files and folders from your desktop and put shortcuts there instead. As a general rule, don’t keep actual files, folders or programs on your desktop, as your desktop must completely load when you turn on your computer and log in. This will significantly speed up your initial startup of your operating system and the overall running of all programs.

6 Finally, removing programs from the registry’s run folder; HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run will allow you to free up even more operating memory. Careful! This is your registry and do not delete anything related to your antivirus program, but you can safely remove things such as anything from adobe, office launcher or other such things. Make sure you know what you are deleting before you do so, or you can end up getting rid of something you really do need.

If defrangmentation mean: defragmentation is a process that reduces the amount of fragmentation in file systems. It does this by physically reorganizing the contents of the disk to store the pieces of each file close together and contiguously. It also attempts to create larger regions of free space using compaction to impede the return of fragmentation.
how to defrag mean:
"Right click the my computer menu then click then manager their you select the defragmentation"!

My acer laptop is running so slow

Hi oyinlag...
Do a disc clean-up of your hard drive...Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disc Clean-up
After the Disc clean-up of your hard drive do a Disc Defragment...Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disc Defragment
After that if it is still running slow then You are probably infected with spyware or a maybe a virus or Trojans.
Try this first...go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Restore...and restore your computer to a time when it was running fast.
If that doesn't work then I recommend that you download and install and run Microsoft Safey Scanner to remove the virus or other junk and spyware.
It is a free program with tech help via the web thru web chat. He can even take control of your computer and do the removal work for you if it is not removed by Microsoft Safety Scanner.

Tip

Speeding up a computer by Defragmenting Hard Drive

Is your computer running slow? Have you tried running anti-virus, anti-spyware, and anti-malware software to speed it up, but to no avail?

Perhaps cleaning up your hard drive could help. This tip will explain, in step by step instructions, how to defragment your hard drive.

To Defragment your hard drive:

1) Go to My Computer.
2) Right click on your C drive.
3) Click Properties.
4) Click the "Tools" tab at the top.
5) Click "Defragment now..." in the middle of the window.
6) In the window that pops up click "Defragment disk"
Defragmenting your disk physically moves files that are similar or
fragmented into an area that will more efficiently use your space.
5) The Disk Defragmentor will analyze your hard disk.
6) After analyzing it will move and defragment the information appropriately.
Disk Defragmentation is complete. You should see noticable improvements in your computer's speed and preformance.

Not loading when does it does its slow like slow 30min toload

Hi

Try this solution.

Restart your computer and press F8 to run on safe mode. After that restart again your computer. Running your computer on safe mode will fix and correct some errors because of faulty installed drivers, multiple drivers installed with same drivers or faulty software installed in your computer.

Also, run disk defragment on your computer by going to start menu, choose accessories, choose system tools, choose disk defragment and after this, restart again and it will run faster other than before.

If still slower, just run the system restore to restore the previous setting of your computer. Go to accessories, choose system tools, choose system restore and choose the date your want to restore.

I hope it helps you.

Hi

For some reason computer getting slower because of faulty driver installed, multiple driver with the same driver installed, faulty installed software.

I suggest you run your laptop on safe mode to correct the faulty drivers and it will automatically fix it and also run the disk defragment on your C drive. Just go to start menu, choose accessories, system tools, choose disk defragment and after it restart your computer again. It will run faster that before.

A list of ways to speed up my computer

1. Add more RAM.
2. Defragment the disk-drive.
3. Buy a faster-spinning disk-drive (7200 RPM versus 5400 RPM).
4. Run a "full" virus-scan.
5. Close unnecessary programs (BitTorrent, MSN Messenger)
when you're not using them.
6. Pay your Internet Service Provider more per month, to get a higher-speed service.
7. Buy a "high-end" video-card -- a slower video-card makes the computer seem slower.

My acer TravelMate 4100 PC Notebook is lagging alot immediately when I startup. I have to wait for more than 10 minutes to start a programme and I could not use 2 programmes at the same time. What is...

First, run a Anti Virus scan, then a Malware scan.
Avast AV is a good free version, and Malwarebytes is for malware/spyware.
Update both software packages, and disconnect from the Internet when you run them.

Second, run a checkdisk, and a defragment your 'C:\' drive.
Open 'My Computer', Right click on the 'C:' drive, choose properties, and click on the 'Tools' tab. Click on 'Check Now' in the 'Error-Checking' section. Check both boxes, and click 'Start'. A Window will open up; select 'Yes' and reboot the computer. This may take some time, depending on the size of your Hard drive. After the check is complete, it will start Windows.

In the 'Defragmentation' section, click 'Defragment Now'. Confirm that the 'C:' drive is highlighted, and click 'Defragment'.

Hope this helps!

Doubt

It does, and this is miscategorised.

The more files stored on your hard drive, the slower it'll work.

To speed it up, delete unused files, defragment your HDD and run a cleanup. I use Cleanup both at home and in work and find it excellent.
