Dead hard drive- does not power up, no lights or fan... What now?

I wouldn't know a graphics card or a motherboard if it hit me in the face-
Will these things be easy to identify if I take the back off?
Thanks!

Yes, you can easily identify the motherboard cause this is the biggest part of a computer where the memory or ram, graphic card, processor, hard disk sond card sts cable and everything is connected to this board. that is why its called the "mother" board.

Could be hard drive crash , could be graphics chip failure , could be power supply failure............................

too vague description :

1. does screen show ANYTHING during boot attempt ?
2. can you hear hard drive or heatsink fan spin on boot ?
3. do you get keyboard LED's to light up on boot ?

If NO on 1,2,3, then power supply is toast . get new one........
If No , Yes , Yes , then graphics chip dead . Try external VGA->VGA output to other monitor , see if that works.
If Yes , Yes , Yes , but not booting then hard drive is toast , try replacing it and re-install windows .

Laptop come on but screen want come on

You may have inadvertently hit a certain combination of keyboard strokes programmed to send the laptop into sleep or time-out mode. Hitting the space bar, power button, "ESC" or other random key should restore the display.

Hard drive beeps

Then what happens does it restart ? or just wont boot up ?

A bit more information please.

Not sure what you mean by 'when the hard drive beeps
does the hard drive start when you turn the laptop on

(at which point a do the beeps occur a single beep isn't unusual) and it stops when you turn the hard drive off - a beep then would be unusual.

I suspect you don't mean that, & if the laptop is working fine otherwise then I wouldn't worry about it or do you mean something else completely?

make sure the ram modules have secure seatings also check all power and data leads attached from motherboard to hard drive the same will apply for your graphics card

hope this helps

Nothing comes on picture blank

Ok
A few things to try
1.) Check the laptop on an external monitor, do you get a picture
2.) Is there power to the laptop from the battery and the charger? Try to see if the charger indicator lamp is blinking green rather than steady green
3.) Can you hear hard drive / fan noises and are there any lights on the laptop?

If the charger is blinking, indicates that power is not making the circuit, check tightness of charging port, if tight, assume fault on motherboard / blown main fuse

If picture on external monitor and not on laptop, assume backlight on screen dead or possibly the inverter

If no noises from HDD or Fan and No lights on laptop, then fault with motherboard

If you do get fan noises etc, but get BLINKING lights on laptop, assume possible fault with graphics chip, repost with details of blinking lights / colour and specific model of laptop

Acer travelmate 8006lmi when turned on only the power light and dvd drive work nothing on the display and nothing if you connect an external monitor either

The graphic chip is dead. replace the motherboard or reflow the graphic chip. I am not fan of BGA reflow. The seldom last beyond 90days.

Good Luck

Hard drive light comes on, CD drive work, blank screen. Otherwise machine is dead

Have the same problem,

Possible Causes

Graphics Card Dead (REALLY BAD)
Just need a HARD REBOOT.

If it is your graphics card, then go find another laptop, Acer embeds them to the motherboard.

Try Hard Reboot first though,
1. Disconnect AC and Battery.
2. Press and Hold POWER for 30-45 seconds.
3. Reconnect AC.
4. Try to boot up.
5. After bootup insert battery.

If your laptop is still under warranty the Motherboard should be covered. I wish you luck as losing a computer is tough.

Jikes, What ever you do Never vacume any PCB Boards or the inside of your computer. You will zap everything with Static.
A Hoover is like a Static Bomb. Rest assured you will very likely be able to get the photos back as i believe its not your hard drive that is at fault. If you need to then i can recover your photos and files.

Lets try a few things. (You might just be very lucky)
Open the Case, Turn it on its side and Remove the Graphics Card (If its not a built in on the board type) Then remove all the power from the Powerpack to the motherboard (Physically remove the Cable Plugs (Should usually be one or Two)
then remove the Power Plug on the back of the PC, wait about 5 minutes and then insert the Graphics Card, and the Power to the Motherboard, then Plug the mains to the Power Pack, Cross your fingers and pray, Switch on. If the problem still is same then remove Power from Back of PC and locate the Bios Battery (Looks like a Flat Watch battery) Check voltage if you can or replace (Should be 3 Volts or close to)
Please let us know how it goes.
