Dead hard drive- does not power up, no lights or fan... What now?

I wouldn't know a graphics card or a motherboard if it hit me in the face-
Will these things be easy to identify if I take the back off?
Thanks!

Yes, you can easily identify the motherboard cause this is the biggest part of a computer where the memory or ram, graphic card, processor, hard disk sond card sts cable and everything is connected to this board. that is why its called the "mother" board.

test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA

the leads from your ((motherboard to your hard drive)) make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them they could be faulty
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd have secure connections and are not faulty or just replace them they could be faulty ?

even something as small as an electrical extension or a faulty fan lead can cause this problem computer needs all of the data and power to travel through every working device and to have an end for a computer to be able work properly

a motherboard and a hard drive any leads between them will fail before your motherboard or your hard drive check all electrical extensions make sure they are securely seated even the cd/dvd drives need to have current go through make sure these devices are working

could be a dirty graphics card you might have remove the graphics card and clean the socket

also check your computer ram and cmos battery to make sure they are securely seated and the battery has plenty of charge
hope this helps you

Hi

There could be many things that could stop the board from turning on, Determining what is wrong is like detective work. What I do, is take everything off the board to start. Then add the minimum to start a board to see if it will start. That's one drive (cd or HDD or whatever as long as it's a drive) the CPU, graphics card (if required) and one bank of memory, unless the board requires dual matching chips.. (that's not a required eliminate, but it helps avoid beep codes) Also, make sure you have your pin's set on the board absolutely correct, or that could be your problem to begin with. Also, if your going to load a ide drives, make sure you set your pin settings for master/slave/CS are set correctly on it. Now, you should get the power supply on, and the cpu fan spinning. If those don't power up, it's then either one of the six elements. The CPU, Power supply, Ram, Drive, graphics card or finally the motherboard. The next step is to replace each one of the elements with another to see if you get any change. Also, on the drive, try a different cable to make sure it's not that. I usally start with the drive, then move to the memory chip, next CPU, Last PSU. I also make sure that my replacements work on another machine first. If no change, then it's save to say you have a bad Board. It's a lot of work I know, but it's the sure fire way of finding out what isn't working.
Please don't forget to leave a rating.

Thanks Mark

I get nothing on the monitor when it starts up!!!!

I assume you have had the side panel off to watch the cpu fan spin up? if it does spin up and you get no bios beeps, then the fault is with the motherboard or CPU, most probably the motherboard. Problem sounds like capacitors blown or leaking ( have a look at the board and see if any are bulging or leaking). I've had similar issues with the motherboards that HP use, in all cases it was the motherboard at fault

Whining noise is something in motion or moving.Does the graphics card have a onboard fan?Is it clean and free moving.

How about the processor fan? clean, free from wires or anything hitting it.?

Disconnect hard drive and see if you get the sound.

Hard drive light comes on, CD drive work, blank screen. Otherwise machine is dead

Have the same problem,

Possible Causes

Graphics Card Dead (REALLY BAD)
Just need a HARD REBOOT.

If it is your graphics card, then go find another laptop, Acer embeds them to the motherboard.

Try Hard Reboot first though,
1. Disconnect AC and Battery.
2. Press and Hold POWER for 30-45 seconds.
3. Reconnect AC.
4. Try to boot up.
5. After bootup insert battery.

If your laptop is still under warranty the Motherboard should be covered. I wish you luck as losing a computer is tough.

Computer won't wake up

ok, there could have been a graphics issue in the bios caused by the windows graphics drivers, heres what you could try........... remove the power cord from the back of the machine, remove the side panel to allow access to the motherboard, you will see a battery! take it out for 10 mins and push the on/off button a couple of times, this will drain any remaing power from the motherboard, after 10 mins the CMOS should have cleared so you can replace the battery, plug in the power and turn the machine on hopefully you'll get a signal

good luck

Graphic card problem

Hi BIOS21, I know this much. I know you're motherboard can not use a PCI-Express video card. You're board can not support SLI. I know from looking & reading the manual for the MSI KM4-L you're board supports an AGP video card. I also know some AGP video cards need extra power for them to function. This varies from card to card. You did find an open power port on you're AGP NVIDA 6600 256MG 128bit card. So plug in the power cord. Every AGP card receives power from the AGP port. Enough to run the fan. Depending on the card it may also need more power provided by the system to function. This is you're case. The power connector would not be on the card if it was not needed. Other AGP cards use the same power cord as a floppy drive. (Just so you know).
