I have an FE-290 Digital Camera. The xD picture card was removed from the camera to upload some very important pictures to a laptop. Somehow, we were unable to do so. We inserted the xD picture card back into the camera and it displayed this message:
Clean the terminal of the xD card with the dry cloth.
xD CARD CLEAN FORMAT
I've tried repeatedly to clean both the inside of the terminal and the contacts on the picture card. Yet it still displays this message whenever the camera is turned on. It won't let me do anything else...and when I try to upload the pictures with the USB cable, my MAC doesn't detect any hardware. I can't just format the xD picture card either because we NEED these pictures. What should I do?

1. Stop trying to connect your camera to the computer. Obviously, this is only giving you problems.
2. Get a card reader. Use it to download your pictures from now on.
3. When removing anything (camera, card reader, etc.) from a USB port on your computer, always use the "safely remove hardware" function.
The 2nd link is the manual in .pdf form, and there should be a usb cable that came with your camera and if you lost the cd-rom then you can download drivers for free from the olympus support site (1st link).
Try a different xd card in the camera and always check the batteries first but if is it still giving the same fault, your camera is faulty. It should be taken to an authorized repair centre for a repair estimate. Very few digital cameras have any user-serviceable parts. Regardless of the brand of your camera, place the card (xD in most Fuji models) in the reader. ensure that card is readable ("My Computer" initial screen).
The uploading package will likely display all pictures.
If the all pictures you want are contiguous, click on the first picture that you want to upload, hold the Shift key and click on the last pictures you want to upload. release Shift.
If you like the camera and XD cards then I would use the USB cable to download the photos from the camera. When you plug the USB cale into the camera and then into the computer, the computer should recognize the camera and set it up as another disk drive. Copy or move the pictures from the card to your Photo location. Use the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the system tray to disconnect the camera and your done. The camera can format the XD card and the computer can read it through the camera.
never format the card from the computer... format using the camera.. use data recovery software to retrieve pictures if you have not formatted it... also make sure to "safely remove hardware" before actually unplugging the camera from the computer
very strange indeed better take the camera and the xd card to your supplier and see what is wrong .. i gues you have not pushed the card the wrong way?? or put the little white tab downwards ( than it is locked against accidentaly formatting )
it's the only thing i can come up with or remove the xd card put a few photo's on internal memmory than connect cam to pc > upload the pictures > then set the jog dial to setup > reset the camera and try again ,
