Question about Philips 42PF7320 42 in. EDTV-Ready Plasma Television

2 Answers

No picture, VSCAN issus.

I have a 42 in Philips that is about two years old and the picture no longer works. When the unit is turned on there is no picture and you hear sound for about 3 seconds then it stops and the light on the front blinks 7 times. I have followed some of the directions here to troubleshoot the issue and have narrowed it down to a VSCAN issue. I have removed the back cover and when the power switches off the green light on the power supply blinks 3 times. The code on the PS board says that 3 = VSCAN. When I remove the wire that is labled VSCAN from the PS board and power the unit up the sound stays on but there is no picture. I do not want to take it to a repair shop as they have told me they charge $250 just to look at the problem. What is my next step? Do I need to replace the PS board? Do I need to replace some capasitors on the PS board? Is there a different board that I need to replace (VSCAN). Thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer.

I have identified the Y-main and Y-buffer (2) boards. They do not appear to show signs of overheating but I have not removed them from the system to inspect the rear of the boards. Is there a way to identify if the voltage from the PS to these boards is correct? I was able to do some testing with a meter and it appears that there is less than 5VDC going out for both the VSET an VSCAN.

    There is no hissing sound.

Thanks for the advice. However, if I was interested in having a technician do the work on my set, I would not be on this site. The only qualified (per Philips) technician within 50 miles wants $250 just to look at the set and they said it is most likely a PS issue and would charge me $675 to replace it. I can replace the unit at todays prices for about $900 (paid $2300 2 years ago). If I blow the set I am no worse off than where I am now NO TV!

I am looking for assistance in identifying the problem down to the exact board and possibly even down to the defective component on the board. I am sure if I just went in and replaced all the boards that the system would start working again but I can't afford, nor is it my desire, to spend a few grand on a set that can be replaced for less than 1K. Any assistance that can be offered is greatly appreciated.

If you hear a kind of hissing sound then is a faulty ballast

Three flashes is reserved code, it means a major fault. If it is accompanied by an hissing sound this mean a faulty ballast, the sound ends when safety switch takes power off and returns flashing code.
I can find the replacement part, however I suggest calling in an expert repairman for mounting it.

Sorry, this is a plasma I was typing solution for traditional rear projection, plasma is much easier. Just replace Ysus board.

About testing the Ysus, you should really not be in there messing around. You need to set voltage drop across R36 to -200v within 1/2
volt. That is enough voltage to
completly ruin your TV if you make a mistake. Find a qualified technician to do this for you.
Or take the risk and replace the whole Ysus with a Y sus kit.

Here you find a replacement board, inquiry them with an email if you can't find the part on website.
    Or post model number here.

You can find Y-sus kit for a cheaper price on Ebay.

Well, it should not be done by a non expert repairman. In any case, to test your Ysus you need to measure across resistor

R36. and then set it to -200 +/-.5v.
Get a DVM, set it to the 1000v DC scale. connect DVM on the two sides of the resistor. DVM should read around +_200vdc,
I do not know what polarity, but it is not important at this stage. If reading is wrong replace the whole Ysus kit.

If the problem is same with different input devices and you have ensured the are no loose contacts in power outlet, RC jack, cable and sockets, the TV needs servicing.

5 year old plasma that looses half the picture

Hello. I recommend that you forget the repair for two reasons. 1. Pricey. 2. You still have a 5 year old set with no warranty. In the last five years, the tv technology has come so far. The HD is fabulous. The new sets cost less to operate and they are so much better than they were five years ago. Joe

Philips 42PFL3603 tv sound but no picture.

Hold a flash light to the screen after it goes off and see if you can see a faint picture. Sounds like your backlight might be cutting off. Repair can be expensive but some of the newer units don't require the entire LCD to be replaced.

Philips 42PF7220A/37 Chassis Number BP2.3U

I think its something on the picture frame board or on the line output board. I would sway to the line output simply because I think but not sure that error code is linked to the line output stage plus when you unplugged the cable the voltage seems within parameters. Good luck.

Most likely the YSCAN UPPER board and/or YSCAN LOWER Board also gone. Your new YSUS board may damage again if you don't replace the bad YSCAN boards. Try to replace the three boards together and then to verify which boards are bad one by one. Good luck.

Power supply board led green light blinks 3 times.

vscan is a voltage used to setup the picture for the panal. It goes to the y sus board. The problem is at the power supply or the y sus board. You can check these with a meter.

You can go into the menu and adjust the picture setting. If that does not fix the iss and the set is under a year old then it will still be in warranty. Contact Philips at 1-88- 744-5477 and have them do the repairs under warranty. Don't do it your self because that will void your warranty.
