While the system boots, look at the laptop screen from a sharp angle to see if you can detect any imaging.
If so, then either the backlight CCFL (fluorescent tube) or the high voltage inverter for it has failed.
Neither of these are expensive to replace (check on eBay) and replaceable by a user with some manual skills and a few small tools.
Replacement by a pro may cost somewhere from $100-$200 US.
Both of them are often located in the display portion of the laptop.
