Perhaps it's some type of sensor but my lens doesn't "see" anything.  Everything else about the camera seems to be working except the major reason for having a camera - it can't pick up an image.

  • maroesjal Sep 08, 2008

I have exactly the same problem. Seems like it is something with the lens.

  • HAJ41 Sep 14, 2008

Sometimes LCD turns on others it doesnt. Seems to be a connection that is intermittent. Works OK when screen fires up

Same problem, have read it could be "ccd image sensor" - was a problem for Sony a few years ago, is it still? Has anyone had luck w/ Sony?

Same here... I was taking pictures the other day and all was fine. Turned the camera off, then back on a few minutes later to take a few more pics and the LCD is black and the lens won't see any images. Argh... Is there any way to reboot the software?

I haven't used my camera since early summer.  Finally recharged the battery last night and now have a black screen.  I can see the menu, but am getting no picture on the LCD and the "picture" I pulled from the card is pitch black.

  • Anonymous Dec 05, 2008

It was working fine and then now its all black we've even booght a new battery thinking that might help but not yet!

  • Anonymous Dec 10, 2008

THe Last time I used my camera was Oct. 18 - and it was working great.  I tried to use it last night and the view finder and the LCD screen was black - and at times had lines. I tried to think back if I had dropped it or had left it in my car - but no...I treat this like my baby, have never dropped it or left it in any hot car or humid environment.

I've read a few problems and see that Canon is offering a free fix, but I'm out the shipping cost - is this true?

  • Anonymous Dec 19, 2008

I'll try the solutions described...sad...i really liked this camera...hope it finaly works !

  • The_lockhart Dec 20, 2008

I have the same problem. Looked after th camera like it was a piece of glass. never dropped it or left it in my car on a hot day. Has been working fine. Gave it to a colleague to take my pic today and he found it had a black lcd screen and viewfinder. My wife has the same muddle and has had no problems with hers.
I have tried the first solution. did not work.

  • Anonymous Jan 05, 2009

I've the same problem too, we didn't use the camera for some time.
The camera was stored properly. When starting up again, the screen remained black. It seems to work properly, you can take pictures but they are all black. The method in the TV-mode doesn't work with my camera.
I'ver tried it for several times.
I' am going to ask Canon in Amsterdam

Solution #1 is correct, and it worked for me. Only a couple slight variations for the solution.

The solution is:
1. Move the camera to TV mode(the wheel with AUTO,M,TV,...)
2. Set the exposure time to 15 seconds(15")
3. Take a picture. You should hear the shutter snap, but it can take anywhere from 5 to 30 seconds for the camera to reset back to the initial display screen.
4. Once it is back on the main display, open the battery compartment and remove/replace batteries (also, be sure to have full strength AAs in the device, as battery power may be involved with this issue).
5. Close battery compartment and repeat entire process.

I had to do this process about 10 times for it to work. Good luck everyone!

Comment posted on Dec 13, 2008 The problem is the iris is stuck. I don't know what cause this, it could be dust or wet air or both.

The solution is:
1. Move the camera to TV mode(the wheel with AUTO,M,TV,...)
2. Set the exposure time to 15 seconds(15")
3. Take a picture.
4. After 7 seconds remove the batteries and put them back on.
5. Repeat the procedure until it works.

Note: You could also just quickly remove the lid of the baterries and put it back on.Also repeat the above several times until it works.

I had same problem but fixed it.

The nikon d80 menu screen and playback didn't work. Just remained black.

The shuttle release was slightly jammed with a tiny bit of grit. Removed the grit and the shutter release started working normally as did the menu button and playback. It had been intermittent too.

This is usually caused by a bad CCD sensor.

Computer screen on Toshiba Satellite L745-S4110 worked yesterday. Will not come on, stays black with computer on. What could I have touched to make screen stay black?

There *could* be a video switching setup (usually FN and f8) that allows you to switch from LCD to External and "projector" modes. If these are not in the correct selection, your LCD will be blank because the pc thinks youre watching external vga connection. But it could also just be a bad connection to the lcd panel from the main unit

Black line down right side of screen

turn off laptop.
press and hold on the D then press Power button.
during the LCD BIST test check if the black line down right side of the screen is visible. if yes LCD needs to be replaced. if not connect your laptop to an external monitor check if the black line display appears to the ext monitor, if yes uninstall / reinstall video driver if fails replace video card or if it is built in replace motherboard.

if no ext monitor available then run PSA (press and hold Fn key then press Power button)

check if the black line is visible. Check also in BIOS is black line is visible, if yes then uninstall reinstall first the video driver if fails replace LCD.

The monitor needs to be replaced. I had an LG LCD that did this luckily it was still under warranty. Contact the maker and have your receipt handy. Otherwise buy a new monitor. Monitors tend to be replacement only

I have a Philips 19" Lcd When i swithced it on everything was fine until about 5 seconds later the screen went black. I have found that if i switch the monitor off and then on it works ok until...

A 19" Philips LCD prefers a setting of 1440X900 if you are too far off this it will turn itself off.
Right click on the desktop, go to settings and set it to 1440X900 and then go to advanced and make sure the refresh rate is set to 60 Hertz. Shining a flashlight on the screen will help you see.

There other thing that might be causing this is the setting on the monitor itself. Press the Menu button on the LCD and adjust the brightness and contrast.

If all else fails, contact Philips. This is a premium brand and it comes witha 4 year warranty.

ECS Elitegroup lcd screen turns black after the unit is switched on after a time

It would be either the backlight behind the LCD or the inverter board capacitors going out, my suggestion buy a new LCD screen.
