Dell 8600 Optical drive NEC 5100A problem

The optical drive no longer spins when a disc is inserted & the disc only clunks every 2 or 3 seconds. Then either ejects the tray or promts to insert a disc. A check in devices in the computor control panel tells the device is working ok, but i think otherwise.
Can another optical drive ( possibly different brand) be fitted to this modular type bay.
Is it as easy as unscrewing the Dell slot drive carrier from around the optical drive unit & refitting it?

Thanks

The optical drive is shot. You can put a drive from another machine or brand in the drive carrier as long as it fits. I've had some drives that the face plate is too long to fit, and others where I trimmed the face plate a bit and made it fit.

I would suggest another drive from a Dell. The cut out slot for the release mechanism makes this face plate hard to match. I do know that, besides your model series, the D series latitude, inspiron 2200, and inspiron 6000 series have the same type of drive.

I have satellite C50D-B-10q. How do I open the CD/DVD drive?

Removing discs
To remove the disc, follow the steps as detailed below:
Do not press the eject button while the computer is accessing the optical disc drive. Wait for the optical disc drive indicator to go out before you open the disc tray. Also, if the disc is spinning when you open the disc tray, wait for it to stop before you remove it.
1. To pop the disc tray partially open, press the eject button. Gently pull the disc tray out until it is fully opened. When the disc tray pops open slightly, wait a moment to make sure the disc has stopped spinning before pulling the disc tray fully open.
2. The disc extends slightly over the sides of the disc tray so you can grasp it. Gently lift out the disc.
3. Push the center of the disc tray to close it. Press gently until it locks into place.

How to remove disc when the disc tray will not open:
Pressing the eject button will not open the disc tray when the computer power is off. If the power is off, you can open the disc tray by inserting a slender object (about 20 mm) such as a traightened paper clip into the manual eject hole near the eject button.

Manual eject hole:
Turn off the power before you use the manual eject hole. If the disc is spinning when you open the disc tray, the disc could fly off the spindle and cause injury.

Wont read discs

If after the DISCs are inserted there is no spinning of the disc or reading then in the first place you can think of cleaning the lens- optical head unit - in the cd drive.
If this wont alter and there is no detection , then the drive is faulty and needs a change.

Cant restore acer netbook back to facotry settings did not do backup when purchased

Recovery procedure for Acer netbooks.

Important Information

The Recovery disc will help you to restore the hard drive with the original software content that was installed when you purchased your notebook. Follow the steps below to rebuild your hard drive. Your drive will be reformatted and all data will be erased. It is important to back up all data files before you use this option.

Restoration procedure:

1. Press the power button to turn the system on.

2. Select to boot from a USB optical drive. There are two ways to do this:

2.1. Press <F2> during the Power-On Self-Test (when the Acer logo is displayed onscreen after bootup) to enter BIOS Setup.

2.1.1. Select the Boot menu.

2.1.2. Refer to onscreen instructions to set the first device to any bootable optical disc drive.

2.2. Press <F12> during the Power-On Self-Test (when the Acer logo is displayed onscreen after bootup), and select the USB ODD from the list that appears.

3. Ensure the Recovery disc is in an external (USB) optical disc drive, and exit the boot selection menu, by selecting Exit Saving Changes from the Exit menu or pressing <F10>, or by pressing <Enter> as appropriate.

4. Select Exit Saving Changes from the Exit menu or press <F10>.

5. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation process.

6. When you finish the recovery process, please remove the Recovery disc and insert the System disc again.

7. Restart your computer.

Create a Recovery USB device

You will need a second computer with an ODD to complete this procedure.

1) Insert the Recovery CD into the optical drive. Plug in a USB/flash drive with a minimum capacity of 1 GB.

2) Enter the BIOS setup and set the first boot device to the ODD. Save the changes and exit.

3) Allow your computer to boot up.

4) From the list of options, select "install2usb".

5) You will see a list of available disks, select the USB drive you plugged in.

6) Click the next button to complete the procedure.

7) Remove the USB ODD and USB/flash drive. You now have the Recovery system stored in your USB/flash drive, for future use if necessary.

DVD rom drive not seen on My Computer Page using XP profesional unable to identify drive but drive spins up when inserting a disc, No optical drive on system page either. Notebook had new hard drive after...

4 Possibilities can occur there.

1. It's either that the Optical Drive is disabled in the BIOS

2. It's either that the Optical Drive is faulty

3. It's either that the Optical Drive's connection to the motherboard is loose or disconnected

4. It's probably the Operating System is not showing the drive for some unknown reasons.

This is only based on my experience troubleshooting desktop and laptop computer.

Remove the optical drive:
1. Position the computer with the left side toward you.
2. Remove the Phillips PM2.5×7.0 screw 1 that secures the optical drive to the computer.
3. If needed, insert a thin tool, such as a paper clip 2, into the release access. (The disc tray is partially ejected
from the optical drive.)
4. Grasp the bezel and slide the optical drive 3 out of the computer.

My CD drive wont read any cd's, how can I tell if I need to replace it?

Load a disc and put your ear next to the drive.  Is it spinning and stopping?  Is it engaging but not spinning? Then you need a new one.  Try running a disc cleaner kit through the thing first to make sure your optical pickup isn't dirty.  If that doesn't work, the yes your drive is definitely fu.k.d up.

Turn the computer over.

Remove the optical-drive security screw.

Insert a scribe into the notch and push it to the side to release the drive from the bay.

Slide the drive out of the bay.

To reinstall the optical drive, slide the drive into the drive bay and snap it into place. Then replace the optical-drive security screw.

ZV5370US Optical drive no longer works

Those chances are pretty high, although I would try testing with different discs, and types of discs. In example dvds, cd's, I don't recomend CD or DVD R RW discs though, they are generally harder for the drive to read. Also with the cost of replacement laptop parts you may consider trying to have it serviced before accepting defeat and replacing the unit.
