To resolve this issue, edit the Microsoft Windows registry to identify the CD-R drive or CD-RW drive as a recordable drive. To do this, follow these steps.WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
1. Click Start, and then click Run. 2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK. 3. Expand the following registry subkey: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD Burning\Drives 4. On the File menu, click Export. 5. In the File name box, type backup of drives key, and then click Save.

Note You can restore this registry subkey by double-clicking the backup of drives key.reg file that you saved. 6. In the left pane of the Registry Editor window, click the Volume{GUID} folder under Drives, where GUID is a 32-character hexadecimal globally unique identifier.

Note If you have more than one CD-ROM drive in the computer, an additional Volume{GUID} folder is listed for each drive. 7. In the right pane of the Registry Editor window, double-click Drive Type. 8. In the Value data box, type 1 or 2, depending on the drive type, and then click OK.

The drive type should be 1 if it is a CD-R and 2 if it is a CD-RW. 9. Quit Registry Editor. 10. Click Start, and then click My Computer. 11. Under Devices with Removable Storage, right-click the CD-R drive or CD-RW drive, and then click Properties on the shortcut menu. 12. If the Recording tab is displayed, Windows recognizes the drive as a recordable device. 13. Click Cancel.

Note If you have more than one CD-ROM drive, DVD-ROM drive, or CD-RW drive in the computer and the Recording tab is not displayed, an incorrect drive may have been configured as "recordable" in the Windows registry. To troubleshoot this issue, follow these steps: a. Follow steps 1 through 9 to edit the Drive Type value of the Volume{GUID} folder whose value you previously changed. b. In the Value data box, type 3, and then click OK.

The drive type value of 3 indicates that the drive is a standard CD-ROM and is not writable. c. In the left pane of the Registry Editor window, click the next Volume{GUID} folder. d. Follow steps 7 and 8 to change the Value data entry to 1 or 2, depending on the drive type. e. Quit Registry Editor, and then follow steps 10 through 12 to confirm that the Recording tab is displayed in the properties dialog box of the CD-R drive or CD-RW drive.

I have an un-formatted DVD-RW. I want to record music on it. First how do I format it so I can record music, and second, can I record music on a DVD-RW?

No you cannot record music to a DVD-RW. You must use CD-R media to record music as CD players cannot read DVDs. However you can burn the music to the DVD if you plan on using a DVD player to play the music. I beleive some recording hardware does allow you to use DVD's, but most use CD-R media or digital media such as a hard drive or flash media.

Computer does not recognise that there is a CDR built in, there is no drive shown in (my computer) Also not in registry , CDR is Philips Model No: CDD4801/65 Manufactured: May 2001 part no:...

Check to make sure the MB IDE bus sees the drive by going into your Bios setup.

If the system does not see it there, I would check your connections to the drive and MB.

If it doesn't see it in the bios, it won't see it in the OS.

Your original software package came with:
CD/CD-RW/DVDWinDVD SE 5 (with optional 5.1 upgrade) and RecordNow 7.2
Record Now is the recording software for burning CD's on your system.

Look at this how to guide for Record Now.

Recording from sky planner to dvd

Yep all you will need is a DVD recorder Philips do a good low cost version DVDR 3380 and a Philips DVD+RW ( this is the type that you don't need to finalize before you can use it in your PC)

All you have to do is make a connectiion to the video out of the Sky box using the suitable connection normally a SCART lead in to the EXT1 or EXT2 of your DVD recorder.

Play the Sky program in your planner and hit record don't forget to select the time you require 1 (HQ) 2,4 or 6 (SLP) hours. It will take as long as the program take to run to record it.

The best way to get the DVD-Video into your PC is to use the excellent TMPGEnc v4.0 Xpress from Pegasys use the Souce Video Wizard.

Then select the DVD-VR button this will read in the DVD content and then allow you to edit it and re-encode to almost any format.

If you select over 4 hours or recording most DVD standalone recorders will revert to Half D1 this equates to 360x576 instead of the Full D1 resolution of 720x576 (standard PAL for DVD-Video) you will need to use this filter to convert the half to full download it here Half D1 to Full D1

Is it possible to record from an exsternal device, ie cd burner to roxio on my computer... via rc cable out to mini plug in?

I don't think it's possible to record directly to cd. You can record from an external device to your PC and then burn that file. Depending on what you're trying to do depends on what software you'll need. Sound Forge is an excellent bit of software for recording. I use it to record when I play on my record decks, but it's the industry standard and isn't cheap. I think that the latest Roxio has a 'Record Now' bit of software with it.
Basically, you want to plug your external music device's output into your PC's input. (Normally the pink socket) and then use whatever software to record the input.
Be careful with the levels. You want it peaking just on the edge of the red!!

CD Burning gets stuck

Try this: : Decreasing the burn speed If the drive is not recognizing the disc at all, skip to Step 4. Decrease the CD writer's burn speed by half to increase the likelihood of a successful burn. Decreasing the burn speed is a quick, easy way of increasing successful disc burning sessions, at the expense of taking more time to create a disc. The following steps are for Windows XP only. For Windows 98 and Me, decrease the write speed from within the software that you are using to write discs (RecordNow, Easy CD Creator)
  1. Click Start , and then My Computer .
  2. Right-click the drive icon, and select Properties .
  3. Select the Recording tab and reduce the Current Write Speed by half (for example, from 16x to 8x).
  4. Click OK and close the My Computer window. Try burning a CD. If the drive fails to create the CD, go to the next step.
Step 4: Setting up disc recording in Windows XP If the computer does not have Windows XP, skip to Step 6. If you are using Windows XP, use the following steps to ensure that native burning is enabled:
  1. Place a blank disc into the drive. NOTE: If the error <drive letter> is not accessible. Incorrect function. " opens, close it and continue using these steps to correct this problem.
  2. Click Start , and then My Computer .
  3. Right-click the writable drive icon, and select Properties .
  4. If a Recording tab is shown, select the Recording tab, select Enable CD recording on this drive , and then click OK . Try burning a disc again. Continue to the next Step if you are unable to burn a disc. If a recording tab is not shown, continue using these steps. Figure 2: Enable CD recording on this drive c00368150.gif
  5. Look for a Recording tab: If the Recording tab is not shown, Windows XP has not detected the drive as a recordable device. Use the following sub steps to enable the Recording tab:
    1. Click Start , Run , and type regedit in the Open field.
    2. Backup the registry: Select My Computer from the list, click File , Export , type a name that you will remember, and click Save .
    3. Click OK , and browse to the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD Burning\Drives
    4. Click the Volume key that matches the CD/DVD drive that is capable of writing discs. If only one drive is installed, one volume key is listed. If you have more than one drive, examine the data values (by double-clicking them in the right pane) to find the correct drive.
    5. With the volume key selected in the left pane, double-click the Drive Type value in the right-pane. Figure 3: Drive Type registry value (CDRW) c01367502.jpg
    6. Type the number 1 in the Value Data field if the drive is capable of recording to CDRW discs (including CD-R discs). Type a 2 if the drive cannot write to CDRW discs but can burn CD-R discs. NOTE: A value of 3 indicates that the drive is only capable of reading discs. Changing this value to a 1 or 2 enables Windows to view the drive as a recordable drive.
    7. Click OK , and close Registry Editor.

How do you burn a cd on the travelmate 290 ?

Windows XP CD Copy Windows XP has CD-Recordable (CD-R) disc burning support for most CD writers.
8b118c9.gif First set your CD-recording options:
  • Open "My Computer"
  • Right-click your CD-R drive and select "Properties". See figure BK-1.
  • Select the "Recording" tab (if this tab isn't available, your device doesn't support CD burning).
  • Check the box to "Enable CD recording on this drive".
  • Select the drive to hold the temporary files (before the system burns a CD-R disc, the system writes the files to be recorded to an intermediary area - this area must have enough free space to hold an entire CD's content).
  • Select the CD recording speed (Fastest, 4X, 2X, and 1X).
  • Select whether to eject the media after recording.
  • Click OK.

Perform the following steps to record to a CD-R:
  • Insert a blank CD-R disc into your CD burner.
  • Copy or drag the files or folders to be recorded to the CD-R drive, or right-click on the files or folders and select Send To, Writable CD.
7f66e80.jpg
  • After you have copied all the files, select the CD-R drive from "My Computer" and you'll see the waiting files as "Files to add to the CD."
  • Right-click the CD-R drive, and select Write to CD.
  • Enter a name for the CD-R disc, and click Next.
  • The files will be written to the CD-R disc.
  • After the system writes all the files, it will eject the CD-R disc (if you chose that option above).
  • Click Finish.
