Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive
I have the same problem. The three clicking sounds and then it goes idle. My Powerbook doesn't detect the harddrive at all.
It's not just that. My second MyBook 500GB just died. I had already lost everything once when the first one bit the dust. The second- which was the warranty replacement- died a couple of weeks ago. The MyBook series is awful and is extremely buggy. My first drive did exactly what you're describing- making the three clicking sounds before shutting down and not being detected by the system. WD replaced it, but did nothing to recover my data.
My suggestion would be to let WD replace it if it's under warranty, If it's not under warranty, crack it open, pull out the drive and attach it directly to your motherboard to see if you can at least save your data.
