Question about HP Pavilion a1240n (EG136AA) PC Desktop

1 Answer

Firewire I bought an Apricorn external hard drive and it has a firewire cable and no power cable.  The drive worked immediately when I hooked it up to my macbook pro.  When I hooked it up to my HP, the drive light flickers and nothing happens.  It's almost like the firewire ports don't supply enough power to operate the drive.  Any suggestions?

Firewire is a lot like usb in the power area if the drive is not getting power i would suspect the firewire port. firewire did not become very popular because of problems like these. You need to go down to a computer parts store and by a firewire card and that should provide enough power and bypass the on-board ports. Try to hook another device up to the firewire ports and see if they work if not install the daughterboard with firewire ports

I recommend you, test the cable, the Firewire ports. test connection.
Plug the firewire into the camcorder BEFORE turning it on,
You must use a Firewire cable and FW ports (Firewire to Firewire) NOT USB port
Check the cable no bend.
1.- Try with other cable
2.- Try connect a different Firewire port on your PC (or connect to other PC)
3.- To test the FW port on your PC connecting other devices by example external hard drive
If the Hardrive work fine the problem is with your camcorder

I recently purchased an external hard drive, and how do connect it to my computer.

External Hard Drive is mostly of the USB interfacing type. If urs one is the same, then it is just as simple as plugging in a pen drive in the USB port. If it has external power supplies then u can easily figure out how to connect. There are two parts in the power supply (if external power supply cable is provided), 3-pin main power supply connector and other is the adapter which goes to the external hard drive.plug in the other end of the adapter into the hard drive (there is a hole in it). connect the main power cable to the adapter extension. now for the usb Hard Drive, connect the USB cable to the USB port of the computer. Switch on the power supply to the Hard drive and u r ready to use ur brand new External Hard Drive. If it is a Firewire interfacing one then u may need to open the CPU box, and then connect the firewire connector on to the motherboard firewire port. It is easy to identify, it is a red colored port/connector.

Your USB port does not have enough power to support the drive. You will need to use an external power source of try a firewire cable if the drive has that option.

Attach external hard drive

firewire adapters only fit into firewire sockets..if you don't have that upgrade, you most likely only have USB ports..

Hooking up My Book to my computer

Your MyBook has a choice of connections, either USB or firewire. You only want to connect the USB. Perhaps someday, you will want to connect to a computer with a firewire port, but without an available USB port, and your MyBook will be able to.

Two units conflict when connected thru Firewire 400

Windows XP and most pcs running it does not natively support firewire,as it was developed by Apple computers. Most Firewire ports on PCs are 4 pin. Your PCI card ( and I take it, its a desktop youre referring to ) should have a 6 pin connection. Firewire connections also have a 7 watt supply via the bus. You may need to open the computer and see if the molex jack on the card is being powered by your computers power supply. Two firewire drives, especially the power hungry Lacie quadras, may be to much consumption for the card. Hope this helps.

LaCie FireWire drive

I would seek out the latest drivers for the card in addition to checking to see the firewire card is properly installed. I would test the cable with another or ports. The D2 has a various array and combination of Firewire ports on each model. Also, try bringing the drive to another computer, to eliminate all other variables. Always of course, properly eject external hardrives and wait for confirmation whenever disconnecting it from the computer, and allow the drive to spin down before turning it off.
