Can't update my bios on hp pavillion a1010n??

Have you downloaded the right BIOS for your computer and do you really need to update this?

According to the HP support web site above the only version is 3.09 dated 21 June 2006 - if you already have this version, this may be why you cannot update it.

If your problem is that your computer is very slow, then updating the BIOS will not make any difference - you should concentrate on cleaning up and optimising the Windows file system.

Download and install the following utility programs that can help you to improve the performance of your computer.

Advanced System Care Free - run the Deep Care option of this utility.
DiskMax - run a Detailed Scan and let it clean up all profiles, updates, cache etc.
Smart Defrag - run a Defrag and Fast Optimize
CCleaner - use this to compliment the above plus use the Tools Uninstall option to remove any unwanted software programs, browser tool bars etc. Also use the Tools Startup option to disable any of the programs being started on every boot that don't need to be, i.e. things like QuickTime, Adobe Reader etc.

Tip

What should I backup ?

When you have problems with your pc or laptop it can be too late to save everything. Even if you have the time you usually forget something. Those you usually remember after the drive has been replaced or formatted and everything is long gone.

Let's say windows is acting up or your hard drive or computer isn't doing too well so it is headed into the shop to get fixed. The tech says they may have to format or replace the drive. They usually won't remind you to back anything up. They just warn you they may wipe it out. If you had the time and everything was behaving you could so a complete backup. I've never seen anyone actually want to do one of those until the computer was having problems and by then it is way too late.

The easiest way to do this is by using the files and settings transfer wizard. It is located under the system tools folder on your start menu. This will get most of what you need but you want to check. Simply run it and select the old computer option then it will ask where to save to and it will also let you look and change what file type it backs up. It may not get everything important so check.

When you back up file while there is a problem you can't count on the machine so you need to prioritize and get the important stuff off first. Once that is safe then you save off files that are annoying to replace but can be with a bit of work. And last you want to backup things that are annoying such as favorites and email addresses.

So what you need to do first is backup important and irreplaceable files. These are things like letters or documents you have written, perhaps pictures. Think about the files that the programs and you have spent hours or more creating or you cannot replace. Those are the things you want to save off first.

Next you want to save things like address books, favorites and other types of things that you generate while using the computer. Email addresses are not hard to replace over time but it can be annoying if you can't find one if you need it right away. Favorite web sites are easily saved but if you spent hours looking for something and just stumbled across what you need it gets rather annoying to try and find it again. If you do a lot of searching you know just how hard it can be to find the same page. The idea is to look at each program you use or thing you do on your computer and the look at what you need to save off. Somethings can be more important to you so you may want to save them off earlier.

Programs are never important you can always install those again.

There are somethings you may need to export instead of copying off. This will export or save things to a file and then you just copy the file off to somewhere safe.

So as you look at this you should see that you want to save things off in priority. If the drive or computer keeps on working fine, but what if it quits and all you had saved was a few funny emails. You will not be a happy camper to say the least.

If you are not connected via a network to another computer then the best thing you can use is a USB flash drive. These are fast, cheap to buy and can hold a lot of stuff. It is worth going over this once before you have problems so you get an idea of what and where to find things. Much easier and way less stressful while the computer is running properly.

My computers cooling fan keeps speeding up and slowing down is that a good thing or a bad thing

I'm assuming your desktop has an AMD processor?
AMD have a process called "quiet and cool" this basically speeds up the fan when the processor is under load and getting hot or slows it down when the processor isn't working as hard.

Dell 2400 dimension desktop

When you said "I think its a memory problem" your right, you need more of it. Try adding more RAM. It's really cheap now a days, especially for the 2400. Memory is available everywhere. While this is not an endorsement of their site, Computer Memory Outlet.com has about the cheapest RAM available and they are reputable and reliable and orders usually ship next day. I personally get all my memory from them.

p.s. They have an on site utility that will scan your computer and tell you the exact RAM you need and the maximum RAM you can add

Hi! computer help pls!

You need to run the recovery discs that you received with or burned after you first got your computer. Some computers have it built in and you can access it by hitting the key that it tells you during boot up to run a system recovery, often F10 if its an HP or Compaq.

Emachines T2698?

Hi, On the e-Machine desktop, go to the CMOS/BIOS set-up and set everything to default or fail-safe settings. Save and Exit. Verify also that the desktop auto detected the hard disk. If the unit will still not boot to the OS, you may have to reinstall/recover. Slip in the installer/recovery CD and opt for "Repair" Hope that this be of some help/idea. Post back how things stand or should you need additional information. Good luck and kind regards.
