Cannot boot up from CD-Rom with Win 95 and Win 98

You probably have a version of windows 98 that was not bootable on CD. You would need to boot from a windows 98 floppy bootup disc, then go the the d:\win98 directory and run setup from there.

Error message says cant find operating system

Are you intending on reinstalling windows? If so follow these steps;

YOU WILL LOSE ALL YOUR DATA IF YOU FOLLOW MY METHOD

Enter your BIOS menu - This is generally accessed by tapping F1 or Del when the computer is booting, but it should be displayed on the screen as the computer starts

Find the "Boot Options" menu sometimes it can be a tab or under advanced options each BIOS varies

Set you 1st boot device to CD/DVD

Reboot with the disk in drive

You should be prompted to hit any key to boot from CD - Do so

The CD will begin the installation process

Delete your current partition and reformat the hard drive in the format of your choice then begin the installation process

It is pretty simple from there

I DO NOT advise doing this is you are not confident with your abilities it may be a job for your local technician.

Install Xp From Dos

If XP will not install from the CD or if you have a new drive with no operating system onit yet try these:

Install Windows XP from the hard drive with Windows 98 already installed:

Boot Windows 98
Insert the XP CD into your CD reader
Explore Windows XP through My Computer
Copy i386 folder to C:\
Go into C:\i386 folder and double click on winnt32.exe to launch the setup from the hard drive

Install Windows XP from DOS (ie. no OS on a new hard drive):

Boot with a Windows 98 Start Up disk
Insert the Windows 98 CD into the CD reader
Run smartdrv.exe from the Win98 directory on the windows 98 CD (file caching)
Type cd.. to back up to the root directory
Insert Windows XP CD into the CD reader
Copy the i386 folder to C:\
Go into C:\i386 folder on C: and type winnt.exe to launch the setup from the hard drive.

I want to boot from cd to change windows from xp to 98

enter the bios set up on start up. Go to boot sequence, change 1st option to cdrom instead of main drive. Save and exit. Let it boot up, put 98 disk in cdrom. Shut down, reboot and win 98 installation will begin asking you to over write existing ops sys. Choose yes and the install should be a breeze after this. Once xp is installed, dont forget to return to the bios and change back your boot sequence to hard drive as primary /master.

Win 98 se file trouble

get hold of a win 98 boot disc (search the net) as it will have the files you are looking for, i am sure. copy them to your hard disc c:\windows or c:\windows\system
put them in both as i cant remember what one they go in. (it will not hurt in both).

good luck

Acer Aspire T180 PC Desktop

if you have windows 98 boot disk put that in, the firt thing you do is to go to f-disk and change the partions in it, then format c: drive. take out disk in A drive put in New windows XP CD and restart. the disk will run and install itself. and thats it. right now your partions are set to read only windows 95, 98, there are 2 options to choose from I belive the one you need is 32.

The quick restore dosen`t work

What operating system you are using before installing windows xp. If it is windows 98, Your restore cd will restore windows 98. if you want to restore to factory settings pls boot from the restore cd and format the harddisk. Becareful, this will erase your entire data on the harddisk which cannot be recover. If you are using licenced (not pirated) windows xp boot from it and reinstall windows xp so that you can run the os smoothly. But in either case becarefull when you are formating, it will destroy entire data and you may endup in soup. feel free to revert back for further quiries
