Compressor noise and shutoff

Hello, I've previously posted this problem but I am still working on it. Here is my progress to date. The starting cap is good (15.5uf). The current draw from the compressor is 9.6A before shutoff. The relay does get warm for the few seconds it is on. I plan on ordering a new start relay today but I was hoping for a warm fuzzy from the experts before doing so.The fridge is 7 years old and out of warranty. Relay P/N 218721119. Thanks

No expert here, just another victim.

Have you experienced anything like power disturbances shortly before this problem came up?
We lost a compressor some years ago due to a 'low-line' condition (~20-25 VAC) while we were gone from home and tha is not enough to start the compressor but is was enough to fry it.
It never ran again.

Can you see that the compressor shudders when trying to turn on?
This would indicate that it is starting up but if you see no movment (the suspension whould allow some) then it isn't even trying and could be seized.

The current seems about right, placing the power at ~1100 watts but all modern compressors will have thermally protected motors that will limit current in case of such a seizure to prevent fire.

The dropping out after startup kind of suggests that the current draw is monitored and limited so that if it fails to start, it can shut down again.

If used as in most normal motors, that the start capacitor supplies a phase-shift to a serarate winding that is shut off after spinup, instead of a centrifugal switch, they are just using a relay.
The effect would be the same.

I believe that noise is coming from the compressor because one on the springs inside of the compressor shell that the motor mounts to is weak so when ever the compressor powers down the motor knocks against the casing of the compressor. While i know the noise is very unnerving the only way to fix it is to replace the compressor and that will cost somewhere around a $1000.00 and since it works fine as far as cooling the food ok perhaps that expense isn't warranted. I have heard that nosie before and know its loud but i too know it causes no harm to the compressor

Hello. I have this fridge-freezer, but unfortunately I can't remember when it was bought. I guess it must be between 7 and 12 years ago! It's worked fine but a couple of days ago it started making...

By your description you may have a compressor problem. The noise is makes if a buzzing noise when it struggle to start (locked up). The clicking noise would be the relay clicking out on overload to the compressor.
If your correct on the date, you will be better off replacing the unit then looking into the repair, a normal compressor change out can run over 500.00. Your best bet is to cut your losses and replace the unit before spending any more money on it.
Good Luck

Hello, kkqawel, Probably.....your Compressor Start System has died. Many times a customer will advise you that they heard a 'clicking noise' every few minutes. Replace the Compressor Start System (CSS.) The CSS is located on the compressor and usually has a red wire and a white wire
(120 VAC) going to it. Hopes this helps! Handy Henry

My 2 door fridge - the lights are on but does not work means does not get cold. No humming noise either. For a while I was resetting the temp to off and back to 3 or 4 then it starts working for 2-8...

So when the thermostat settting was changed the compressor worked but did it cool? if not switch off the compressor for about 8 hours and then switch on with the thermostat set to normal cooling, if the compressor cools the watch the progress further , if cooling drops the next day check the auto defrostt timer.
if there is no cooling then the compressor or gas pressure is low.

Frig shutters and makes noise when the cooling cycle shutoff.

It is probably caused from one or more of the four rubber bushings that mount your compressor to the refrigerator frame. The bushings wear over time and causing the compressor bracket to have a little play. Then when the compressor stops it moves the frame slightly bumping against the mounting bolt causing a slight to moderate sounding clunk when stopping, Also check a lines and cords as a cord refrigeration line near the compressor or fram can also cause the problem.

Whirlpool fridge incessant buzzing

The knocking noise when cuts off , is a compressor internal motor support spring , broken . This does not mean the compressor is bad , only noisy for the rest of the compressor life , but should be covered under the 5 yr warranty . The gurgling sound is the refrigerant being pumped thru the system . The buzzing could be from the compressor also . My suggestion , would be to call a factory warranty company , to see if they can replace the compressor under warranty .

Hello compressor fix problem

w-hoots, I ended up replacing the start relay and it worked great after that. I tried to insert a picture of it, but it would not post for some reason. It is located on the side of the compressor and has three wires going to it. It is made up of a switch and a relay that is attached to the switch. I replaced them both and it started right up. If I recall, it cost me about $70. Hope this helps you out.

The humming noise is the compressor cycling on the overload protector. By the posted date I would think that you already replaced the refrigerator.

Amana Model # ARS2464B Refrigerator and freezer does not work right

The problem is the compressor.  Techumseh compressors are notorious for this problem.  Pretty soon it won't start at all.  The compressor has a 5 yr warranty from date of purchase.  I replace these all the time.  The good thing is they are replacing them with Embraco compressors which are much better quality.  Would appreciate a solved rating for expert advice.
