Question about Samsung SpinPoint M80 HM160JC Hard Drive

1 Answer

No boot, HDD ok, weird problem

Hi,

I had this harddrive in my laptop for 16 months. yesterday it wouldn't boot, so I tried the following:
- run Samsung diagnostic tool --> no error
- run a win xp repair: the setup goes fine, and seems to copy files to the drive, but on reboot, it's stucked after bios screen.
- put another drive: works flawlessly.

Can the drive be broken, despite the diag saying otherwise? Any other idea?

Thanks for your help.

    Thanks for your reply!

I've done as you asked, but still no improvement. Cursor is blinking on the upper left corner after bios splash screen.

Hi I've Vaio VPCSC1AFM with Win 7, boot is impossible -"Operating System Not Found", HDD is also not visible in BIOS. I can hear that HDD is working.

* Look in your BIOS, I've it can detect the HDD.
( Press the F1 or F10 key after restarting the computer) * Make sure all the cables are connectedproperly.

* It might be a jumper setting.

I've you have 2 HDD's on 1 cable, you need to have 1 Master & 1 Slave,or else your HDD(s) wont show up & other problems.

Jumper settings below (Yourjumper settings might be different !)

I've this all didnt work, either your HDD or your MOBO is broken.

My laptop is saying that their is no operating system not found what do i do to fix this problem i have a sylvania 8.9 lcd m 512mb and a 160gb hdd

check the bios whether the HDD is dectected (you can the get the bios by tapping F1 in XP and F10-in Vista and windows 7) if the hdd is dectected perform a smart short test (click on ur harddrive-smart support-smart short test )-----If the harddrive passes the test

-then try hitting ESC while boot up select the hdd to boot check if that works

if that doesnt work then you need to run the the operating system disc

After starting the game the comes till loading then it goes off

Possible that the harddrive is not running at its normal speed,
freezing up or slowing down. Or has quit.
My computer took 20 min. to boot the other day.
I was watching the HDD activity indicator light,
and it would remain on, and not rapidly blinking.
Mechanical devices do have problems.

Harddrive manufacturers have software for download for testing HDD.

As for my laptop, I had it off for several months, then took over one hour to get the harddrive cranked up to speed.

Also DUST inside Desktop computers can gum up harddrives.
Is yours clean.????

Hi, I have a Toshiba 80GB MK8037GSX 2.5" SATA in

1) have checked bios cannot see hdd mounted.

That is BAD -- the disk-drive could have "died".

2) tried a seagate hdd works fine so connections in laptop seem to be working

That shows that your motherboard is GOOD, but that your disk-drive is BAD.

3) can hear hardrive trying to do something as can hear harddrive usual noise, continous noise for about 5 sec before getting the error message

That is BAD -- the disk-drive is "dying".

4) no rattling or crackling noise from drive apart from the above

That is BAD -- none of the files can be read from your disk.

i have created a ubuntu boot up disk which allows me to access laptop but does shows error when locating hdd,

That is BAD.

once in ubuntu i can access internet but it does not show the windows partition of the harddrive, only shows ubuntu as opearing system, confused.

That is BAD. Only the CD/DVD disk has been mounted -- Ubuntu could not mount the disk-drive.

In regards to ubuntu working does this mean the hdd is ok?

No, it means that your motherboard is working.

and is there anyhting i can try via ubuntu to locate the files?

No. The disk-drive is "dead".

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

Please Start

It is reaching POST but not boot so I would check your harddrive is ok. Search online for a free harddrive diagnostic such as Seatools and run that.
See if it is recognised in BIOS, when it boots to the IBM screen tap F2 (or whatever button takes you to BIOS setup) and under the boot section see if your HDD is listed.

Check your harddrive is connected properly, if it is clicking or making any strange noises it may be damaged.
Hope this helps,

Acer aspire 5534 laptop won't boot up. Says insert a bootable disk. Also says missing cable. Just started acting weird with no warning.

Go to boot menu by pressing Boot option key while Laptop booting up and then check the the Harddrive status. If harddrive is not listing anywhere in bootmenu, unplug and plug the Harddrive again. If it will still not work, replace the Harddrive and reinstall the OS.

Boot into Setup and run the TOOLS / PRIMARY HDD TEST / SHORT TEST.

If it fails, try another HDD.

If OK, verify Boot Order is Floppy, CD-ROM, HDD. Exit Setup.

Print Table 1 Low Level Format instructions from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/106419

Boot with a DOS disk that contains Debug. Run the Table 1 script. Turn V5000 Off.

Boot with the HP Operating System CD. XP install should now proceed normally.

Good luck.
