It sounds like you can't connect via wireless? In that case Network Magic won't display the connection.

directly connect the dsl modem to your pc and then restart your system. once your up and running the pc should automatically create a connection with the modem device. once you have established an internet connewction this way, shut down the system and reboot. after complete bootup, unplug the power supply cords to both the modem and the router. now plug im the modem, wait 1 minute and plug in the router. after about a minute you should now be able to connect to the internet both by your pc and wireless connections.

I am currently working a friend's desktop computer with Microsoft XP Pro, SP2. It's a dell system with 256 mb ram, n 2.0 ghz Intel Pentium 4 cpu. When i received the system they said they needed a new anti...

You need to increase the memory before you do anything else. There is nothing wrong with a gig or two of memory providing your clients computer will support it.

I think id copy what ever files your client wants to save and then delete the user that you are having trouble with.

Id create two new accounts, 1 would be a standard user and the other would be an administrator user. Id tell the client to use the standard user.

I think Id be setting up a wireless connection to both users. Use your network as the contact of course.

You need to clean the computer ... use CClean, a free download. Defrag the drive ... use Windows defragmenter or Defraggler (from the same people that provide CClean), another free download. I think you should log on to PCPITSTOP and have them scan this computer. Read all of the report that they will provide you for free. Does your friend have a network? Id suggest you get Network Magic to help you with the network and connection to your/his(her) network. Read the deal while you are at the Cisco website. I think you should consider Comodo Reg Cleaner to clean the registry and lastly, you might consider Spy Bot - Search and Destroy available for free at PC World web site.

I hope this helps you ... and thank you for helping your friend.

Let me know if there is anything else I might help you with.

Internet no longer working, but internal network is fine.

i agree with all the above.. it's definately clear as mud how the network is designed and or funtioning. The machines connected to the wireless d-link router.. are they via cat5 inthe wired ports or wireless ? is the server the machine thats connecting to the switch and wiress router and modem? i'd say reset all switches modems routers and machines.. shut them all down.. then fire the cable modem, then the wireless router then the desktop switch then the server, the workstations and the one lonely wireless.. run "ipconfig /all" on all machines and if they aren't all sharing common ips and access, provide the results here for further investigation.

Windows xp no longer recognizes my wireless antenna/program

To change windows to the controlling program, click on Start, then head over to Control Panel. Under Control Panel, double click on the icon for Network Connections. There, find the Wireless Network Connection. Right mouse click on it and go to properties. After the Properties Window pops up, Click on the Wireless Networks Tab. There, check mark the box which says "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings." This will activate windows control over the network card. Hopefully this helps.

Emachine W3107, DSL won't connect

Hate to tell you this but . . . Turning off your computer isn't much help if you have a stike on phone or power lines not too distant from home.
Even many supposed surge suppressors aren't worth much for protecting electronics.
If you are in a lightning prone area, I would highly recommend the installation of a 'whole house protector' which is installed at your main breaker box.
The cost is typically <$300 US and they come with insurance for (mostly) $25,000 replacement cost.

Unless you go that route, I strongly suggest you actually UNPLUG your system and any other electronic items you value when you get the first rumbles - even then perhaps too late.

With the various failures you describe, I suspect your 'southbridge' chip on the system board is damaged. If this is the case, the board will need to be replaced at a minimum.
After that, you still don't know if memory, drives, keyboard etc. will be functional.

For a description of the typical internal PC layout, look at this:
