A clarification on EDTV vs HDTV - they are not interchangable.
Unfortuanately, there are so many blogs, white paper and uninformed salespeople out there now, it's easy to get confused.
Video Resolution Levels -
480i = 480 x 640 - SDT - 4:3 (Interlaced scan)
480p = 480 x 704 - EDTV - 16:9 (Progressive scan)
720p = 720 x 1280 - HDTV - 16:9 (Progressive scan)
1080i = 1080 x 1920 - HDTV - 16:9 (Interlaced scan)
1080p = 1080 x 1920 - HDTV - 16:9 (Progressive scan)
The HDTV Video 'Standards' originally agreed upon were 16:9 aspect ratio with 720p or 1080p resolution (1080i is the best resolution currently being broadcast. This may change after Feb 2009, when more bandwith is freed up by the d/c of Analog broadcasting).
Enhanced Definition Television [ EDTV ] - 480p (480i backward-compatible) :
EDTV has the same resolution as Standard-Definition Television (SDTV), but with progressive scanning, which creates a smoother overall picture, instead of interlaced scanning.
EDTV has a picture that is superior to that of SDTV, (480i), but not as sharp as high-definition television High-Definition Television (HDTV - 1080i/p).
A EDTV is capable of displaying the 480p (progressive-scan) format at up to 60 fps with either a 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio rather than being limited to SDTV’s 480i (interlaced-scan), 30-fps format.
SDTV’s can receive enhanced-definition signals (480i & 480p), which do not have the detail of an HD signal but do improve on the Standard-Definition (SD) picture.
As stated above, EDTV can be in either the 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio, for a resolution of either 480 x 640 or 480 x 720 pixels.
HDTV signals can be displayed but because it doesn't have enough resolution to really do the images justice - EDTV's don't provide as much detail as displays with higher native resolutions (1080i/p).
