There can be two possible reasons for this: Defrag checks your hard drive for errors before it runs and will not run if you have bad sectors. You can run "chkdisk /f" from the command prompt (Start, run, CMD, enter) to fix those errors. Secondly, you could have less than 10% of drive space left on your Hard Drive. In this case you would need to burn some stuff to DVD or delete unwanted programs to free up enough space. If these don't work, you will need to provide more detailed information so that we can help you better.

Tip

Speeding up a computer by Defragmenting Hard Drive

Is your computer running slow? Have you tried running anti-virus, anti-spyware, and anti-malware software to speed it up, but to no avail?

Perhaps cleaning up your hard drive could help. This tip will explain, in step by step instructions, how to defragment your hard drive.

To Defragment your hard drive:

1) Go to My Computer.
2) Right click on your C drive.
3) Click Properties.
4) Click the "Tools" tab at the top.
5) Click "Defragment now..." in the middle of the window.
6) In the window that pops up click "Defragment disk"
Defragmenting your disk physically moves files that are similar or
fragmented into an area that will more efficiently use your space.
5) The Disk Defragmentor will analyze your hard disk.
6) After analyzing it will move and defragment the information appropriately.
Disk Defragmentation is complete. You should see noticable improvements in your computer's speed and preformance.

This is probably a loose video car.

When you were fixing the RAM (probably remove it and then re-seat it), the video card may have come loose.

1. Turn off the PC and unplug it;
2. Touch something metallic to discharge static;
3. Unplug the monitor cable;
4. Open the case and carefully remove the video card.
5. Carefully but firmly replace the video card (most cards will snap when they fit back into place -- follow your video card manufacturer's instructions -- get these from the manufacturer's website.)
6. Plug everything back in and restart the PC.

You should get a good third party defrag program to keep your PC running at its best.

Fragmentation is basically broken-up pieces of files and free space randomly scattered all over your disk. The disk has to work a lot harder to save files in pieces and then to find them again and this really slows your computer down. It also wears out your disk, as the more the disk is used, the faster it wears out.

Basic defragmenting finds all the pieces of a file and puts them together, saving time.

Windows has a built-in defrag tool but it is very slow and you cannot use the PC while it is running (some users complain that it did not completely defrag their disks despite running all night).

Here is a Top 10 Reviews side-by-side comparison of the best defrag programs around:

http://disk-defragmenter-software-review.toptenreviews.com/

Select a program and install a free trial. The better defrag programs are automatic. The gold medal winner in the above review can defrag while you use the PC and it will also prevent fragmentation.

You can get a free trial for the gold medal winner via the review or at: http://www.diskeeper.com/defrag

Defragment your disk drives regularly.

Good luck to you!

Hp Pavilion a1620n, XP Edition. I Can't defrag my recovery drive.

Unfortunately you will need to do exactly what it states, which is free up some space. Defragging a drive requires there to be an ample amount of "swap space" available so that it can move files into that 15% of space while it rearragnes the placement of other files and puts them back in an order which will provide faster access to the files after the defrag is complete. being that it is your D: drive, can't you just move some files to your C: drive to make enough space for the defrag??

Please be sure to rate this solution.

Regards,

Joe

Tried a few defrag programs and some of the files won't defrag

Try using the free AusLogics Disk defrag program (http://auslogics-disk-defrag.en.softonic.com/) If that does not work, you can download a free trial of Perfect Disk Defrag at http://www.perfectdisk.com/home. This program allows you to not only defrag large files, but also consolidate free space, schedule when you want to defrag, and select the files you want to defrag. These are two of the better defrag programs out there. Auslogic also makes a good registry defrag located at http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/registry-defrag/download. They all work great and are good to have. I use them.

hi im wesley. you might have a virus of some sorts or try defragmenting your pc it will also speed it up as this sometimes happens when you have alot of things on your pc and when you delete stuff and put files on all the time it slows down alot and can hang because the files are mixed up on the hard drive. to defragment go to start-all programs-accesories-system tools-defragment then say analyze then defragment.
