Last nite when we turned on the tv there was a medium pitch/whinning noise that caused us to turn up the tv. Upon turning off the tv the noise lasted 3-5 sec like a motor winding down. I checked the 2 small cooling fans and they seemed ok. It seems to be coming from the mirror area in front of the dlp lamp.
I had the same problem with a 5065. I purchased and installed a new color wheel and that solved the noise problem. The color wheel has a bearing that gets "dry", and when it fails it does sound like a fan bearing.

A high pitch sound can be a capacitor losing power it would sound a bit like a fire work. most have back up on the board but it put more pressure on them the more times you use the tv. would check them and replace. all of them can be 5 in a row in some models.
The tv have a colors wheel, have a whinning high pitch sound, mean colors wheel is warping not spinning right any more. The colors wheel is dead, must be replaced. The tv have high pitch sound, shutdown the projection lamp. The projection lamp might be dead or not?Not yet determine dead or just shutdown by the nonfunction of the colors wheel.
Hi,do you hear any strange noises? If you hear clicking or like wanting to turn on it could be the board that powers the lamp it's called the ballast. But if you don't hear any strange noises,tv is around 6000 hrs,2-4 yrs it could be time to replace the lamp. The lamp you need is XL2100 you can find it here http://www.discount-merchant.com/Sony-XL-2100U-TV-Lamp-p/sony_xl-2100u_replacement_lamp.htm?Click=48173 .Have a blessed one!
Assuming the noise is a high-pitched whine, then yes, it is the color wheel. If the color wheel goes out, the TV will turn on for a while, then turn off when it can't establish color wheel sync. The color wheel has to be in sync with the mirrors on the DLP, so if sync can't be established, the TV turns off.
You can order a new color wheel from Sears or partstore.com (among other places) and replace it yourself, if you are so inclined.
