Question about Kenmore 12502 Top Load Washer
We have a Kenmore top loading washer less than 5 years old that has developed an extremely loud banging/rattling sound that seems to be mostly at the END of the spin cycles as the tub is coming to a stop. It lasts 15-20 seconds but seems much longer because of the noise, which shakes the entire floor. At first we thought it was a imbalance problem, because the sound is much like a BADLY imbalanced load, like a rug was in there by itself, but it happens on small, delicate loads as well as normal larger cycles. Could it be the balance system itself? How do I best start looking? From top, removing wringer? Back? Look underneath? When the cover is opened during the event (agitator is stopped, tub still spinning) the noise sounds/feels like it's eminating from the side of the tub. Help!
I recommend you to kindly do the following routines before going to a service man..
This should solve the problem..

The following is a simple problem that can cause this symptom, but it could also be something more serious. For safety reasons, the Kenmore top loading machines we have owned have a small switch to stop the spin when the lid or door is opened. Look at the bottom of your lid and try to find a small rod shaped projection and then note where that rod will go through a hole on the lip where the lid closes. Inside that hole on the lip is a small switch held in place by a couple of screws. If these screws get loose the switch can sag down and not get closed when you close the lid. If you are lucky you can just tighten the screws to fix it. The switch can also go bad. !! Be sure to unplug the machine before proceeding !! After unplugging the machine, work your fingers underneath the switch to hold it while you remove the screws, then pull the switch out where you can get to it (this is tricky, but usually can be done). Remove the wires from the switch and test it with a volt-ohmmeter. If it is bad, order and install a replacement. If this switch is not the problem you will have to dig deeper into things like whether the mechanism that engages the spin is working properly or if the timer is issuing the right signals.
When you open the door you let in warm air to a cold refrigerator. When you close the door that air contracts creating a vacumn that draws air in through the drain.
If you can get to the outlet pump at the bottom you will find the outlet pipe attached to the pump with a spring clamp. You will need a pair of pliers to release the spring then pull the pipe off and check for blockage by pushing a bent coat hanger up it until it exits at the sink end. If it's clear of debris then check confines of the pump for debris or malfunction.

Either something is loose or the main bearing is broken. I would suggest if you would like having it serviced, but I would recommend replacement being that it is 5 years you may want a new unit that will come with a factory warrant.
Let me know if you need any other information/assistance.

If the drum itself is empty, that indicates only one of two possibilities :
One : something slipped between the drum and the drum wall (like a metal wire from a bra)
Try removing the part. Start at the bottom of the machine by opening (and if necessary removing) the water pump. Rotate the drum and try to move the lose part to the mounting hole of the pump.
If that fails open the rubber collar near the window. This last action is rather difficult, and requires luck and skills!
Two : the main bearing of the drum has broken.
As repair involves opening of almost the entire machine, it is difficult and expensive to repair : it's often cheaper and therefore adviced to replace the entire washing machine.
Do not work alone on the machine. Always have assistence available.
NEVER work on the machine unless the electric powercable is removed from it's socket and is visibly lying next to you !!! Make sure : working on a washing machine involves water : lethal in combination with electricity !!!
