I have had my hard drive for a few months now with no problems, but a few days ago my computer stopped connecting to my hard drive. There is a power connection being made, but no data connection. I have a Mac and connect using FireWire. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you!

Re: Power connection, but no Data (Mac)
The first and simple thing to do is to try a different data cable and see if it works. If it doesn't work then may be it has crashed and you can probably recover it using a recover tool like Recoversoft Data data rescue Pc. Th trial version will let you determine whether you can recover or not. If the differnt cable thing wont work then let me know and i will walk you thru the data recovery process using Recoversoft Data data rescue Pc.

you can purchased an external usb case from newegg.com I would first take the hard drive out so you can identify whether you need a SATA to usb hard drive or IDE to usb harddrive. Connect the hard drive in and see if it will power up.
Unless the data on the maxtor is very important You should format the drive, assuming you are using windows, go to my computer, right click on the drive, it should show the option to format. If the info is very important, my advice take it to a info recovery business.
It sounds as though the drive has failed. A hard drive making clicking noises is never a good thing, often indicating a problem involving the read/write head and its servo.
To see if the drive has failed (I believe you mentioned you have a mac?) connect the drive and go into disk utility. If the drive is listed to the left, you may be able to format it. I fear, however, this will not be the case and the drive has failed.
You may or may not be able to recover your files, via data recovery specialists, though these tend to be costly.

If you would like to try software recovery on your own, I recommend Data Rescue II (http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php) You can use the trial to see if your data can be recovered.
Plug it into a friend's computer (in the same cables as his main drive) (Turn the system off and pull the plug out first!) Tell us if it works there.
Data loss happens all the time for various reasons. That's why you need to learn how to use a CD burning program to transfer the pictures to CD's. If you don't want to burn often, get yourself a 16GB little flash drive at least.
It does not sound good, the hard drive may be faulty or even the drive enclosure could be faulty.
Try thr following:-
1. Take the LaCie drive and connect it to another MAC, if it reads the drive, your in luck.
2. Dismantle the drive case and remove the hard drive and reconnect it again (a few times). The drive may need reseating to make proper electrical connection. Test it in your MAC.
3. The LaCie case could be faulty, remove the drive and insert it into another working LaCie drive case. Test it in your MAC.
4. If the hard drive is faulty, there are hard drive data recovery companies that can retrieve your data, but it will cost you an arm and a leg for their service.
In future I would not rely on a single device for backing up important data. You should get 2 LaCie drives or a dat tape drive plus a LaCie drive and/or burn the data on BlueRay disks.
You should also protect your computer and devices against lightning strikes, power outages/blackouts and power surges with an UPS (uninterruptable power supply), especially when you are editing, burning, copying/back up your data.
Take a look at this photo. There are two different firewire connections on it. If your Mac has the one on the left, it is the four pin and needs a power source to run it. If it is the one on the right side, you have a six pin and should have power to run it.
Try rebooting your computer. I have a similar desktop and sometimes after a period of use the drive seems to power down - if I shut down and start up again it seems to work again.
If this doesn't solve the problem, check the connections inside the computer to make sure the drive has the data cable and power cable connected securely.
If you bought the Inspiron 3 days ago, contact Dell for warranty service and a replacement. If you just bought the drive itself 3 days ago, take it back or return it to the retailer you bought it from for a replacement.
External drives of this type are usually internal drives with case power supply etc. You should be able to open the box remove hard drive connect as a 2nd hard drive to PC either sata or ide depending on drive PC should recognise drive at boot up then you can access files and back up to CD, DVD, hard disk. If you are not comfortable doing this usually local PC repair shop will do for small charge. Assuming of course that the hard drive itself is not dead, just the power supply for the external case.

My guess is that the power supplies are the cause of the problem. Taking mine back to the shop next thing tomorrow morning...
