I just picked up a unit that's the same model as this and has the same problem. I took it apart (because I like that sort of thing), and I have more details but still do not have a solution.

The DVD never spins. The trays (3 of them) will load the player, and the read head will move back an forth for placement, but the motor that drives the DVD (to spin it) never turns. I know very little about these types of motors, so I'm not sure what to do next. I'd really like to hear suggestions on this.

By the way, I spun the DVD by hand for awhile. I know I couldn't get the right speed, but I noticed that the "READING" message on the TV stayed as long as I spun the disk, so I'm convinced that the *only* problem is that motor or the power to it. I checked for cable problems and saw none.

The problem, ended up being the DVD drive motor. Unfortunately, it wasn't worth finding a replacement motor.

    3. Power the player back on.

    8. Using the Left and Right arrow buttons, change the last four digits until
they read 0000 for Region Free, 0001 for Region 1, 0002 for Region 2 or 0004 for
    Region 4....
NB: DO NOT Use Region 20!!!
    9. Press Enter on the player.

    Player doesn't recognize DVDs

I hate to be the bearer of potentially bad news, but the problem is not likely the motor. The player attempts to detect a disc present, once that has been completed, the disc will be spun. Since you have the unit open, try cleaning the lens using a cotton swab and alcohol. Next try a music CD. If the CD will play but the DVD will not, the optics have failed and need to be replaced.

    Keep us posted.

    Error message when reading DVD

Try changing the region setting to region free.

    1. Make sure there is no Disc in the tray.

    2. Shut off the unit and unplug it from the AC outlet.

    3. Press and Hold the "Play" and "Open/Close" keys,
simultaneously on the player and not the remote control.

    4. While holding these keys, plug the AC cord back into the outlet. (TEST and CPU ver# will appear on the display)

    5. Release the "Play" and "Open/Close" keys.

    6. Press DVD Menu twice on the remote.

    7. When the display reads s000 5858 use the up and down buttons to change the 000 to 02E.

    8. Using the Left and Right arrow buttons, change the last four digits until they read 0000 for Region Free, 0101 for Region 1, 0202 for Region 2 or 0404 for Region 4.

    9. Press Enter on the player.

    10. Press Standby and wait 5 seconds.

    11. Press Standby again. Your player is now set to the region you requested. If you find some titles do not play on the region 0 setting, you may have to hard select the appropriate region.

Good Luck. Let me know if it works
