Question about RIM BlackBerry Pearl 8100
I am having the same problem, my provider gave me the same info listed above, I updated the software, but my screen is still blank, the problem was not fixed, any other solutions anyone can suggest?!
Well, after doing more research, I found the answer! You need to buy a new LCD screen for your blackberry. I bought mine on eBay, i.e. http://cgi.ebay.com/Blackberry-8100-Pearl-Original-LCD-Display-Screen-Tools_W0QQitemZ290254550103QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item290254550103&_trkparms=72%3A552%7C39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
Make sure you get a screen with the tools, there are very small hex screws, but my tool sucked and I barely got the screws back in. There is also directions on youtube on how to replace the screen, you will have to take your whole phone apart. But it fixed my problem and my phone has worked great ever since.
I also got a rubber case to put on my phone, I have a TERRIBLE habit of dropping mine (hence why my screen broke to begin with) but I have dropped my phone a few times since, and the rubber really protects it, I got that on amazon.com.
Anyways....good luck! :)

Tips for a great answer:
Tip: It is always recommended to backup your data before updating your software. However, updating using your device does not necessitate a full backup.
Step 1 Step 2 Step 3
Key *#0000# into your phone's home screen or go to Device manager(consult your user guide if necessary) Select Options > Check for updates. Follow the on-screen prompts until your update is complete!
